Thread: Insomnia...

  1. #1

    Default Insomnia...

I've been having major insomnia problems lately. No matter how tired I am I can't get to sleep. I maybe have gotten 12 hours of sleep in this week alone and thats a high estimate... I usually am up till about 3 in the morning and I wake up at 6 or 7... but I always feel so tired... I want to get rid of it. But sometimes its a good thing I guess...

I used to (and still do sometimes) have trouble getting to sleep, too. My problem with it is that I'll sleep through my alarm clock in such a case and don't wake up before it's noon.

Don't know what to do about it in your case except the obvious, i.e. lay off the cafeine and don't turn on your PC before you get to bed.

    Two things I find helpful:
    - read a book or do something different half an hour before sleeping - at the very least, when you stop whatever you're doing give your mind some time to get some rest. Computers don't count.
    - exercise. Plan in an hour a day and do something. Jogging, weights, doesn't matter what. If you do it towards the end of the day you get to sleep more easily and feel all the better for it in the morning.

But seriously - I have the same trouble every now and again. I have never found any solution, except to do some push-ups before going to bed and hence going to bed more tired. It sometimes helps.

Sounds like good advice. Also don't drink any alcohol in the last 2 hours before you go to bed unless it's my earlier suggestion (and I mean just a drop of whisky). You will go to sleep easier when intoxicated but you won't sleep as deeply. Also open your window you sleep better with fresh air, and listen to some relaxing music to prevent your mind from getting adrift, chopin is good for that.

Don't drink, coffee, or coke a few hours before bedtime, don't sit behind a computer or tv for a few hours before bedtime (the lightsource is comparable to daylight in some way I heard), a bit of warm (chocolate)milk tends to help.
Get a steady rythm and exercise everyday for at least half an hour, but not just before going to bed (not counting vladimirs exercise cause that does do the trick ).

    I wish I couldn't get any sleep....I sleep between 10 and 14 hours each day...nightshifts are such a drag.

Reading a book may stimulate your mind as well as it can tire out your brain.

Also doing exercises in an hour before going to bed will stimulate your metabolism too. The afterwards exhausting is temporary; your body will take this exercising message such that you need to feel ready to move and energetic, hence giving you a sleep disorder.

The sleeping habits are genetic, me thinks. It just varies from one to another just like how your fingerprints do. So even though you may try all advises here, you may end up looking at the ceiling mumbling curses in the dead of the night.

The easiest way to get to sleep is not getting frustrated about it. The more you think you can not sleep the harder you'll get some.

Being problemous with falling asleep since birth, the only way that I can get some is absolutely SKIMMING THE HELL LIFE out of my mind by tiring it out to a point where I can't think anymore.

    - Don't get annoyed while trying to sleep.
    - Don't make this a BIG problem while it isn't.
    - See a doctor if it reaches to a point of no-sleep.
    - Try to overcome energy flaw problems with vitamin/herbal supplements until it gets a bit better. Still, at your age, you need at least 6 hours of sleep.

    Hope that helps.

LEN's right on many accounts. A good way to get to sleep is to learn how to "will" yourself to sleep by emptying the mind. This is something I have to work hard to do because I find that relaxing my body liberates my thoughts. The body doesn't need sleep, the brain does. Once it relaxes, sleep will come.

    Fat girls.

I don't know, maybe the increased blood flow to the brain makes it more active.

I feel your pain. I can't get more than 8 hours of sleep even if I can sleep in (I average around 6-6.5 hours a night). Not only that, but I usually wake up at least 2-3 times during the night, and sometimes it takes me a while to get back to sleep. I'm an extremely light sleeper, and while it makes it easier to get up in the morning, I'm very jealous of all my deep-sleeping friends who have no issues getting 8-9 hours a night without any interruptions. Any time I can sleep through the night is a cause for celebration. The exercise advice doesn't really apply to me because I run 35-40 miles a week for Track, so it obviously isn't helping me get to sleep. I often wonder how much faster my times would be if I was a better sleeper.

I hear drinking tea with no sugar helps, avoid coffee, i always get loads of sleep on tuesday nights because i go to the gym for an hour straight after school, but i think no sleep makes you look cool, i like the bags under my eyes

Really? Most people find the bags a little repulsive.

When ever I can't sleep it's usually anxiety related. Try meditating, or think about peaceful images repetatively. Like a waterfall, or a seed being planted and then germinating.

I like not sleeping much. I used to sleep as much as anyone else, but now I play my PC till about half eleven, then PS3 till about one, then get something to eat and am usually in bed for around half one. Then I read till I get tired, usually about half an hour, and I go to sleep. I get up at ten to eight most mornings, so I still get the 6 hours (or is it 8 hours recommended). I love the way I get knackered by around 12, then you feel awake again but in a sort of light headed way where you don't think much.

Actually it take 9.25 hours (ie 9 hours and 15 minutes) for your brain to complete all the normal processes it takes while sleeping, namely the movement of memories from short to long term.

I have real bad insomnia, i struggle to get 2 hours a night...but the annyoing thing is, if i get to sleep for longer than 2 hours, i always oversleep important appointments, like doctors, dentists hookers school.

Its a pain, cos when i lay down, all the thoughts ive had during the day all come back, especially about 1 girl in particular. and i cant sleep.

    Default AW: Insomnia...

I'd recommend getting some exercise. Try and go for an 20-30 minute evening run and then knock out a bunch of pushups and situps or other exercises. Have a light but good meal, then read a book or paper or something. I find whenever I have had problems sleeping its either because I haven't done anything physical all day or there is something problematic coming up that I haven't taken care of yet (things due in school, work issues and so on). If you already exercise regularly try and work something that you don't normally work so that the body needs the rest to the build/rebuild those muscles (if you lift then go running, if you run go lift weights), just try and get yourself physically tired and somewhat sore.

Also if you have curtains or something close them up so that you do not awake from the sunlight pouring in.

Other less safe/healthy methods are to either try and stay up one night so that your body can sleep well the next day or to go to a bar and get totally wasted with some buddies.

Hope you get some more sleep!

    EDIT:
There are A LOT of insomniacs here at the Org!
