Default 13 Year Old Corrects NASA

Schoolboy spares NASA's blushes over killer asteroid

A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA's estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, a German newspaper reported, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.

Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a one in 50 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth, the Potsdamer Neuerster Nachrichten reported.

NASA had previously estimated the chances at only one in 45,000 but told its sister organisation, the European Space Agency (ESA), that the young whizzkid had got it right.

The schoolboy took into consideration the risk of Apophis running into one or more of the 40,000 satellites orbiting Earth during its path close to the planet on April 13, 2029.
I wonder if this involved another NASA metric problem.

Looks like NASA will have another German in charge in a couple of years.

Uh, one in 50? That's a 2% chance, right? How big is this asteroid, and should we be worried?

The article says that anyone living near the the Atlantic coastlines within ten to twenty years should be GREATLY concerned.

Both NASA and Marquardt agree that if the asteroid does collide with Earth, it will create a ball of iron and iridium 320 metres wide and weighing 200 billion tonnes, which will crash into the Atlantic Ocean.

The shockwaves from that would create huge tsunami waves, destroying both coastlines and inland areas, while creating a thick cloud of dust that would darken the skies indefinitely.
Uh...now I'm not usually an end-of-civilisation-as-we-know-it alarmist, but 2% chance of this happening is a LOT.

Now if we could capture it in low earth orbit along with the 12,000 other objects. Global Swarming

Imagine how the price in iron would drop... not good for Australia... but I'm sure China would like it.

Thank goodness I live away from the Atlantic. But still, the dark skies that would be dark for years would be a problem for me. Maybe I should go to Sweden where they stored a lot of seeds? in a deep vault. Or I could just collect canned foods. Where would be the warmest and sunniest region? I'm thinking of the Pacific area.

Don't worry about it, its all under control.

What was that James Bond movie where SPECTER steals a nukes and wants to hold a city ransom? Since that's basically the plan only bigger.

I'm unable to find a reliable source for this; NASA hasn't updated it yet anyhow. By the way, according to the article it is 1 in 450, and not 1 in 50. That's 0.0022 %.

It's size is 250 meters. If it's impact energy is indeed 400 megaton, then that is compared to the Tsar Bomba (50 MT) 8 times as powerful. The effects of the impact are 100% dependant upon whether it lands in the ocean or on land. If it lands on a continent the effects will only be regional I assume.

This might be the path of possible impacts; no idea about it's accuracy.

Speaking of James Bond... That map reminds me of Goldeneye's targeting system...
Anyway, I just find it funny how NASA could stuff things up so badly. Like remember when they forgot to take all of the foam packaging off of the shuttle? And now they thought that an asteroid only had a one in 45,000 chance of hitting earth and are corrected by a 13 year old.

The worst place for it to hit would be the great forests of Russia, surely? Super, duper big problems if it hits there.

Ha, I was thinking more along the lines of 20% of the worlds trees destroyed, and a fire that would never end, enough smoke to blot out the sun, but that's just me. :p

0.22% is an unconfortably high propability although not as high as what the initial observations in 2004 suggested (2.7 %)

That said, no reliable sources as of yet. Now that is weird..

Please, Andres, don't give in to this sort of petty regionalism. I don't care what the Catalunians, the Scots, the Norwegians and whoever else say. I am sure they are all fine, distinct cultures within their own right. But I refuse to indulge every petty provincial wish out there to be named as a seperate entity at all times. They should learn that to the eyes of the big outside world, they are simply a part of a greater whole. To us, they are simply 'Spanish', 'British' or 'Swedish'.

FFS, bunch of petty regionalists. All of them. Sheesh.

Andres is not completely wrong. Svalbard has been a part of the Norwegian kingdom since 1925. Even Russia acknowledge this.

"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."
