    Default Stainless Steel mod..any good?

    Hello all,

I noticed that this mod seems to incorporate Kingdoms units into vanilla MTW2- which is exactly the kind of mod Im after.

But what is the general opinion on this mod? Good? Bad? Incomplete? Stable or not? etc etc

    Cheers in advance.

I think SS is a very good mod. The current build (5.1 i think) has main menu crashes, but once you get to the campaign map/battle map it's a very stable game. Hopefully those crashes will be addressed in the soon coming 6.0. The A.I is pretty solid from what I remember and the faction list is pretty diverse with Kingdom additions like Ireland in the mix.

It's a mod definitely worth the look if nothing else!

Stainless Steel is a nice mod with lots of improvements to the regular game, some new units, titles, better AI and AI armies, etc. It's also very stable (like Monk, I have only experienced a crash at a menu, and only one so far). I prefer Broken Crescent, but it looks like Stainless Steel will be used in the new KOTR game and I have to admit it's a great mod.

    Cheers for the replies.

Would I be correct in assuming that you dont need kingdoms to play the mod BTW?

I think the mod uses the kingdoms .exe to launch from, so I'm fairly certain you do need the expansion to play it.

    edit: But i'm not 100%

Version 4.1 does not require Kingdoms, but the newer versions do.

Stainless Steel is a good mod, but is everything supposed to be in German? Not that I mind learning what the German for "scares horses" or "low morale" is, but I'm just wondering whether I've got the wrong version.

I haven't played it for too long yet, but as well as having lots of new units and factions it seems to have some nice new features, such as a simple logistics system: If your armies operate outside your territory for too long, their effectiveness will drop.

Oh, also, on my version, the "late" campaign doesn't seem to work, not sure if anyone else has had this problem.

You most likely either installed MTWII under the German language or there's some Stainless Steel version that uses the German language. Uninstall and try again I would say.

My late campaign works fine too.

And I would highly recommend Stainless Steel. I like having extra cities around the map as well as the other features.

It's a known issue for the 5.0, in the 5.1 everything is in english again.

    Ahh nuts!

Are there any mods out there that do port over the crusader units from kingdoms into vanilla then? (sorry I keep asking this question!)

I could be wrong about this, but I assume any mod that allowed use of Kingdoms units in the vanilla game, would have to use the installed files from the Kingdoms disk to avoid copyright issues. The 3D models and textures belong to CA.

Thumbs up Re: Stainless Steel mod..any good?

I just completed my first campaign using SS 1.5 and throughly enjoyed it. The AI seemed to be more agressive both in attacking settlements and, especially, in attacking factions other than my own. The diplomacy also seemed to work better - I don't believe I had an ally turn on me throughout the campaign. As the Polish, I established alliances with the Lithuanians, Kiev Rus, and French. This allowed me to expand North against the Scandinavians and then south against the Hungarians, used the Bosphorus as my southern land boundary, and island hopped to attack the egyptians from Cyprus . I was also able to keep other factions at bay by making reqular tributes to their neighbor's bank accounts - Irish/Scots to keep the Brits busy (its also helpful to have a fleet block the land passage to Ireland when appropriate), French to keep the HRE busy, Papists and Sicily to keep the Venitians busy, etc. Admittedly, once you take out the Danes and Norwegians, i.e., own the Baltic - you have more money than you can get rid of. I had close to 1 million florins in my account when I ended the game. I was able to buy several provinces from my allies and thus advance without turning them into enemies. In short, a more effective diplomacy regime and a more aggressive AI made for a much more interesting game.
