I've had a thought -- Why not add a private-only text box into the user profiles where we can keep important passwords and stuff? Something visible only to the user that it belongs (for lack of a better word) to.

I think so - the admins or, less likely, the moderators, may be able to view it, but otherwise it is totally private.

Afaik only you can read it and not even the admins can access it.

Yes, same as your password, its hardcoded. The only way for anyone else to read it is in real life or use your account.
