    Default Vanilla Mod

Ok, I have downloaded RTR, very good mod and all but I am missing vanilla. How can I keep RTR and have vanilla at the same time? As I understand, I have to have two folders one for vanilla one for RTR. The only trouble is I only have the one located in ProgramFiles/TheCreativeAssembly. I could copy this easily but how then would I get vanilla?

Byblos, I suspect you may have better luck asking your question in the Colosseum. Omanes or another friendly soul there should be able to help you out.

A belated welcome to the Org, by the way!

You're probably going to have to uninstall RTR then copy the RTW folder and reinstall RTR in one of the folders.

    Hullo Byblos

To save all the extra hard drive space used for R:TR, there is the option of downloading the mod switch version. The mod switcher is a function inbuilt into R:TW which allows mods to operate without overwriting files. This allows vanilla and a mod to co-exist peacefully. It also allows R:TR to compatible with other mods which use the switcher.

You can find this version (for R:TW v1.5) here.

There is also, theoretically, a solution for non mod switcher mods to make them use the mod switcher function.

To do this, when the game asks you where you wish to install the mod point it into "[your R:TW directory]\[mod's name]". The file path you need to insert will by default be either:
    "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\[mod's name]"
    should you have Gold, or:
    "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\[mod's name]"
should you have a standard version, not Gold.

Then create a new shortcut to access the modification on your desktop. Right click, select "New" and then select "Shortcut".

When the wizard asks you for the location of the file, type in "[your R:TW directory]\rtw.exe" -mod:[mod's name as you specified when installing]". Typically the file path will be by default either:
    ""C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\rtw.exe" -mod:[mod's name as you specified when installing]"
    should you have Gold, or:
    ""C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\rtw.exe" -mod:[mod's name as you specified when installing]"
should you have a standard version, not Gold.

    Hope this is useful

One question, will I have to uninstall rtr before enabling that mod switch?

To get the game completely clean and ready to have both R:TR (mod switch edition) and vanilla co-exist, you will have to un-install R:TR and then either re-install or repair R:TW. You will find these as options if you choose to uninstall the game in "Add Remove Programs" (Windows XP and below) or "Programs and Features" (Windows Vista).

If I remember correctly the R:TR uninstaller is fairly messy - rather than restoring the files it overwrote in the first place, it deletes the overwrites and doesn't replace them. Repairing will only work if the version of R:TW on the CD is patched at the same version of your currently installed version (usually only in the case of the white label or gold editions). Due to this, re-installing is probably the easier option.
