Default Rome: Total Realism AAR -Completed

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
RTR AAR, vh/vh, should be anniliated soon :)

Roma was growing nicely, another two settlements had been added to Roman rule, and three wealthy settlements they were. Much of Italia was ruled by Italian tribes posing little or no threat to the Republic. Rome and her three settlements grew, the great treasury in Roma grew, the Senate and People of Rome were happy.

But as usual problems existed. To the south of Rome the Greeks under Pyrrhus were on the move. It came to the Senate’s attention that he was a great commander with an equally professional army with him. The Senate panicked and quickly decided that this threat must be eradicated from Italian soil, maybe someone was motivated by the land they would take in the process?

Needless to say the Roman Army came out of winter camp and made their way to the southern borders to watch over the proceedings with the aid of a professional scout. They found out that Pyrrhus was taking settlements and now bordered Rome herself, enlisting commenced

The scouts worryingly reported of strange, huge exotic beasts named war elephants, none of the like had ever been seen in Italia before Pyrrhus. The Senate worried again and immediately set out to throw gold to every Greek-ruled village in the south of Italia. It paid off and the Romans now knew that velites would be the key to victory, not surprising velites were now being deployed in Rome’s armies. Rome was eager to go to war, they were now just waiting for the right moment.

The Senate were pushing for war, pressurised, the Roman generals moved into aggressive positions around Corfinium. No sooner had they done this the northern watchtowers reported of sightings of Gaul near Arretium, no doubt they would be sieging that soon. They would need to be watched, at this point the Roman army looks vulnerable. Laevinus hastened to attack the Greeks. They gave field battle near Greek held Corfinium.

It went wrong for poor Lavienus from the very start, he was forced to attack uphill into the Greek hoplites, the fighting was furious but not good enough. His infantry line crumbled leaving him exposed and his velites without protection. It was a complete rout and the disgraced Laevinus fled the field leaving his men to die. The war against Pyrrhus had begun on a low.

Now the heat was on for Rome, and the Senate knew it. If the remaining Roman general was defeated in the field, Rome would be open for the taking from both Pyrrhus and the Gauls. Offerings to the Gods were made.

Good reporting, but this might be a short, bloody, and sad story for our Romans.

Quintus called the Senate into meeting.

"My noble Senators, a grave day for the republic indeed." He scanned the solemn faces looking at him. Noting that of Laevinus. "We have been defeated in the field. Disgraced." He strode on. "We have Epirus knocking on our back door, filthy Gauls stealing our front door as we speak!" Quintus was now raising his voice to a roar, the front row of Senators visibly shrunk on their stools. "I will not live in fear for the safety of my people. I am Roman, I am Roma! You are Romans, therefore you are Roma! The citizens huddled by the open doors are Romans, they are Roma. Foreign foes are killing Romans, they are killing Roma, this-must-be-stopped!" He thundered. "Laevinus, speak." Laevinus rose hesitantly, licking his lips and aware of a dry mouth. "Romans." He muttered. "Who are the largest threat to Rome? All those who say Pyrrhus pass to my right, those that say the Gauls pass to my left."

Unanimously the Senators passed to his right.

"Very well. We need an able general to lead our forces to invade Greek Italia. A worthy man who has won great victories on the battefield., a worthy man named Quintus!" The Senators cheered and Quintus rode to the army camped outside Capua.

Grizzled Quintus looked the part at the head of the army, scarlet cloak flapping in the wind, the sunlight gleaming onto his hansdome face. A fearsome enemy at the opposite side of the battlefield, pikes reflecting the strong spring sunlight.

Edit: just spent 10 minutes writing up the last chapter only for me to have been logged out. How annoying.
