    Red face alternatives to TW?

hey, i have been off TW for a very long time now. i am just wondering: are there any good alternatives in this genre out? the battlefield AI (strategy AI not being much better) in Medieval TW is a complete disgrace (as in being very, very poor) to the point of being sickening (the Mods that I have seen do not seem to be able to do much about it)... any competition has created anything better over the last year or so?

That depends on how narrowly you're defining the genre. I can think of several strategy games with entirely decent AIs, such as Civ 4 and EUIII, but the last good RTS AI I can think of is way back in Starcraft.

well, Civ 4 has a decent strategy level AI (when heavily cheating on higher than prince levels), but there practically are no real time battles. so, playing civ 4 is like tossing half of TW experience out (for me, at least).

Europa Universalis: a nice idea, but the gameplay is nowhere near as pleasing and fluid as with Civ 4 and again: real time battles do not exist.

    I guess, I agree about starcraft :))

I know the one you mean, but can't recommend it based on what I've heard and seen. Apparently the AI is only decent because almost the entire game consists of set-piece scripted battles and has precious little content.

XIII Century: Death or Glory. Org topic here.

There's still no demo and still no dates for boxed copies for most of the world.

Imperial Glory is similar to TW but allows peaceful annexation. It's in the age of gunpowder (Napleonic I think) but there are very few units and only 5 playable factions. Gameplay isn't that great but it gets you in the mood for E:TW.

Knights of Honour isn't a bad substitute for MTW and M2TW. It's based around the Medieval times and can become challenging.

Romance of Three Kingdoms series is first of this kind of games, but later versions are damn hard to find for PC.

    ETW - Delayed until Q1 2009
HistWar - Released late this year

It will also be a billion times more realistic, twenty times more epic (Due to the HUGE numbers of soldiers) and altogether ten times better overall. Don't take my word for it though - I'm just a Total War vet who lost faith in the brand after M2TW.

Looks pretty interesting on the first look, but I don't see anything it has that ETW might not have apart from the three level command system and the automated movements of units. (And ETW has better graphics and Naval combat). Still, something to look into if ETW falls short of expectations.

Les Grognards will have way more units and much bigger maps. If one wants a game as close to a realistic simulation as any game currently can deliver, then it will be Les Grognards. If one wants zoomed in eye candy and fast action then it will be ETW.

If you want better AI,why not try RTR?

Shogun Total War: best AI around. I've played exactly the same battle four times and each time the AI responded differently. And with "ïntelligence".

Oh come on, you're being too harsh on the game, it can be excellent this time, who knows, we've still not seen it! And the one reason I'm less optimistic about Les Grognards is because it seems to be from the same developer as Theater of War. I don't know if you've played that game, but I really didn't like it so much.

It is same publisher but not same developer. Battlefront has AFAIK only developed the Combat Mission series and the rest are outside developers. 1C did ToW while LG is done by some French company.

Harsh? So far there is nothing in the limited info we have about ETW that suggests its gonna be very different compared to the RTW/M2TW battle engine: screenshots show improved soldier graphics and a video about improved melee/duel animations so far. That does not mean it cant be good but it will not come anywhere close to what LG promises in realism.
