Yes, very sad. Even more so if you consider that the excitement of the tournament may have played a role in it. And this had to happen to one of the nicest, most modest, hardest working guys in the team.

Are you sure he won´t be playing, though? He's made from stainless steel, you know. It would be typical if the pair decided together that Boula should go on.

He was at the training so he probably plays, hope he doesn't do it for the wrong reasons, feeling obliged or anything. He should be home with his wife if you ask me, in the end it's just game.

Funny thing you say that. This afternoon I was thinking what I would do.

If I were Van Basten I would tell him: "Do what you have to do, first things first, after all football is only a game."

And if I were Boulharouz I would asnwer: "I'm playing. I'm playing precisely because football is a game, it brings out what sort of man you are, and I'm no quitter."

But what do I know? Maybe I am just too romantic.

I got a lucky boost yesterday with two right on guesses, but my over all track record isn't very impressive.

I was gonna go over what most people were thinking with 3-2, but I think I'm gonna wuss out and get more in line with the consensus here.

    Portugal 2 - 0 Germany

I agree with Louis looking ahead, Spain is too pretty for gritty Italy, Pirlo or no.

    Go Portugal!

Not a single German goal, my lady? But the indomitable Sebastian Schweinsteiger is back tonight, after his one-match ban over that red card.

Surprised that King of Portugal_2 and Louis predicted that Portugal will go through on penalties, Germany never looked likely to lose on a penalty shoot out...

    Quarter-Final 2

    Croatia 2 - 0 Turkey

Croatia looks overwhelmingly as favourite to go through, Turkey is a good side but if Croatia play the way they did against Germany then Turkey probably won't make it to the semis. Unless......

Tonight's game presents me with more problems. Both sides are countries for which I have a healthy,
footballing derision, say. The Portuguese should win, we all know that [and how painful that would be]
but we're talking about Germany. The forces of darkness. They will raise their game, because there is
no alternative for Germany outside group stages of a major tournament. The Portuguese are far from
invincible, and the Germans have clear defensive and attacking weaknesses. No Frings, either. Argh.

[Part of me still wants to see a Portugal - Netherlands final, but in calling this game in favour of the
Portuguese, I'm denying the possibility that the Germans might be felled by the Dutch in the most
    delicious of hate-filled finals.]

    Quarter-final Prediction

    Portugal 2-1 Germany

    [After extra time, possibly.]

Cry 'Havoc!’, and let slip the Germans of war.

What a half! Schweinsteiger and Klose, magnificent! Lehman, playing well in between the pipes. And Ballack! He's actually playing football! Amazing.

I only hope our luck stands up...

I still believe Ballack deserves to be shot (team Germany wouldn't miss him anyway) and Schweinsteiger should see a barber asap, but some of those German combinations in left field were magic and Schweinsteiger simply owns right field.

Ballack didn't score, Schweinsteiger scored that third goal using Ballack's head for a third goal post. But Lahm was a force, I totally agree.

That was quite the comeback, and what a fine game to watch. Alle Achtung, meine Herren!

    Great game!

So far, the Germans have been ballacks, a bit lahm. So I expected a klose game. I should've known that they were just laying löw in the group stage and would show what they really kahn during the knock-outs.

    Congrats to Germany!

No doubt they were the better side in the pitch. Like i have said before Portuguese side is too young and unexperienced for favourites at least compared to 2004 and 2006.
Tactically German game was perfect and we made terrible defensive mistakes. Only Deco manage to play at a high level. Both teams had several opportunities to scores but they score 3 and we just 2, so i think it was totally deserved...

They are favourites now, like Holland and Italy (yes...they are back...) and maybe Croatia...
