Thread: M:TW Gold Edition

    Default M:TW Gold Edition

So, after selling my Total War games last year because I'd become bored of them, I recently decided to buy them again, but I couldn't find the original Medieval and Viking Invasion, so I thought I'd get the gold edition with both of them. When I tried installing it on my laptop, it said "An older version is already present, please uninstall this and try again", so I uninstalled the old version, but the message is still coming up, even though there isn't another version installed. Anyone got any ideas as to how I can get round this? Thanks,

The chances are that the un-installer failed to delete registry keys (which are what the installer searches for when installing). Fortunately you can delete them manually through the registry editor.

If you are running XP, Vista with the classic start menu enabled or an older version of Windows, firstly click start, and then select run. Type into the provided box "regedit". After a short pause, the registry editor should open.

If you are running Vista with the new style menu enabled, type "regedit" into the "Start Search" box at the bottom of the start menu.

Be warned - in the registry editor are critical keys which are important to the stability of Windows itself. Avoid removing or editing anything you don't understand while in there.

Once you are into the editor, select "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" by clicking on the "+" next to it, and then from there select "SOFTWARE", and, from there, open up "The Creative Assembly" or "Activision" (depending on the publisher of your old version).

Once you've entered The Creative Assembly's/Activision's category, delete the section titled "Medieval - Total War" or similar. You can do this by right clicking and selecting "Delete".

After that, select the "-" button next to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" category.

Once you've done that, open up "HKEY_CURRENT_USER", and, following the same process as before, move on to open up "SOFTWARE" and "The Creative Assembly"/"Activision".

As before, delete the section titled "Medieval - Total War" or a category with a similar name.

    Good luck

Omanes: Thanks a lot mate. However, I had a bit of a problem, I deleted it from the "local machine" section, but I couldn't find it in the "current user" section, any thoughts?

Byblos: Certainly sir! Where abouts do you live mate, America, Britain etc?

What I said was based on Rome: Total War deletion instructions which may be the issue. Sorry if it caused any problems

As far as I know, entries will only exist in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" if M:TW supports individual profiles for each computer user set up. If not, entries will only be in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". If they're not there, then you can simply skip straight to re-installation with, hopefully, no problems.

    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"

    "SOFTWARE"

    Scroll down to

    "Total War"

    Delete this key

This will pave the way for the Gold installation.

I finally got it working, but when I started a campaign, it CTD'd and it says "M:TW encountered a problem and must close". Any advice? Sorry for the noobing questions guys!

It sounds like a graphics card issue (possibly) combined with Windows Vista. You may wish to check out this thread for support with the issue.

Windows Vista combined with any ATi based graphics solution is thus far proven to be totally incompatible with M:TW. Any Nvidia Geforce 8 or above also is so far an un-broken barrier which also prevents M:TW from working. Intel chips are less well known about due to their lack of popularity with gamers, but I do believe they react similarly to ATi cards on Vista and certain newer models also have limited compatability on XP as well.

I'd also recommend you check the CTD solution thread here in the Main Hall, because even if it is a graphics driver issue, there is a solution that can do away with tweaking your graphics card...that is, someone (Peter_de123) found out, due to running a mod, that two files concerning the campaign map were causing the CTD issues. That mod, NTW, didn't cause any CTD issues, and Peter provided a download link for the two files (instructions are in the same thread I just pointed out).

In fact, here is that very thread...

Welcome to the Org, Prince Bondus! It's a pleasure to have you with us.

As Kaidonni and Omanes Alexandrapolites have pointed out, your CTD issues are most likely related to either your graphics card and/or having Vista as your OS. If you follow the links they've provided, you should hopefully be able to get the problem taken care of.

May all your surprises be as pleasant, then. While we're obviously not as large as the Rome or Medieval 2 communities, Byblos is correct in stating that MTW still has a pretty active and devoted following here -- yours truly probably being one of the biggest fanatics of them all.

Cheers guys! I think I've nearly got it sorted, but I'm so computer illiterate, I need a tiny bit more help. I've downloaded thoe files that you linked me to, but now I'm not sure what to do. Could anyone tell me what I've got to with them now I've downloaded them?

    Cheers guys!

Which files have you downloaded? The fixes that you should try are the replacing of the two next and previous review panel buttons and also, depending which graphics card you actually have, try the settings I posted in the CTDs sticky thread for Nvidia 7 and 8 series cards if you have problems with the synchronisation of unit movement on the battle map.

Be aware that when deleting the registry entries that STW is also stored in the same registry subkey so if you delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Total War" you will also be removing STW's entries as well - if you have it installed. To avoid this, open up "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Total War" and delete only "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Medieval - Total War" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Medieval - Total War (TM) - Viking Invasion (TM)". I think RTW is usually stored in a different key called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\The Creative Assembly" so that shouldn't be affected but don't quote me on that, it may be that earlier versions are installed in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Medieval - Total War" as well.

Actually, Omanes, I have a laptop with an ATI HD 2600 graphics cards and Vista, and the game runs like a charm, I've had no problems thus far with either the campaign or battles.

I downloaded the files that Peter_de123 suggested in the thread that's been linked to. However, now I've downloaded them, I don't know what to do with them. What should I change the next and previous panel buttons to? Sorry about this guys, I'm about as much use with computers as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest!

    Hello again, Prince Bondus.

Right, I'll give this a shot:

The two files suggested by Peter_de123 have to be inserted into your MTW Gold directory.

    Click "My Computer"

There should be a C drive or one which contains a folder called "Program Files"

Double click the "Program Files" folder.

Inside you'll see alot of files.

You're looking for one called "The Creative Assembly"

    Click it twice

Inside will be a folder called "Medieval-Total War-Gold Edition."

    Open it by clicking twice.

Near the top should be the "campmap"file.

Open the "campmap"file and inside the very first file is called "buttons"

Copy this file (by right clicking and choosing "copy" ) then paste it somewhere safe like on the desktop. This is your back-up in case something goes wrong.

Now copy the two files "button_ipnext.BIF" and "button_ipprev.BIF" and paste them in the "buttons" file.

    That should be it.

Try the game, and if something wrong happens replace the "buttons" file with the saved one on the desktop.

Don't try any of this till you re absolutely positive, and ask for any any clarification you need.

Cheers! I think I've got it sorted, just one more question. Do I have to delete the "button_ipnext.BIF" and "button_ipprev.BIF" that are already in the campmap file before I copy the new ones I downloaded into it? Or do I just copy them in? Cheers guys, you've ben really helpful, if only I could use computers!

Safest to back up the original files (simply change their names to "button_ipnext.bak" etc) then copy in the new ones. This will save you over-writing the originals. The if it does go pear-shaped, you can simply delete the new copies, and change those two back to "button_ipnext.bif" - it will warn you about changing file extensions, but that's fine, it's what you need to do

I have an Intel graphics card I'm using on a laptop, but it looks like the granddaddy of yours:

seems yours might be over the limit for Medieval. Can you do something about an older graphics card?
