    ETW - Delayed until Q1 2009
HistWar - Released late this year

It will also be a billion times more realistic, twenty times more epic (Due to the HUGE numbers of soldiers) and altogether ten times better overall. Don't take my word for it though - I'm just a Total War vet who lost faith in the brand after M2TW.

Looks pretty interesting on the first look, but I don't see anything it has that ETW might not have apart from the three level command system and the automated movements of units. (And ETW has better graphics and Naval combat). Still, something to look into if ETW falls short of expectations.

Les Grognards will have way more units and much bigger maps. If one wants a game as close to a realistic simulation as any game currently can deliver, then it will be Les Grognards. If one wants zoomed in eye candy and fast action then it will be ETW.

If you want better AI,why not try RTR?

Shogun Total War: best AI around. I've played exactly the same battle four times and each time the AI responded differently. And with "ïntelligence".

Oh come on, you're being too harsh on the game, it can be excellent this time, who knows, we've still not seen it! And the one reason I'm less optimistic about Les Grognards is because it seems to be from the same developer as Theater of War. I don't know if you've played that game, but I really didn't like it so much.

It is same publisher but not same developer. Battlefront has AFAIK only developed the Combat Mission series and the rest are outside developers. 1C did ToW while LG is done by some French company.

Harsh? So far there is nothing in the limited info we have about ETW that suggests its gonna be very different compared to the RTW/M2TW battle engine: screenshots show improved soldier graphics and a video about improved melee/duel animations so far. That does not mean it cant be good but it will not come anywhere close to what LG promises in realism.
