Nooooo. As someone who is just starting on weight training whey protien is not necessary however once you want ot add more calories or more protien or both whey becomes vital for two reasons 1. eating all that solid food really isnt all that good for you and 2. its hard to consume enough protien in a day. Not to mention weight training effects everyone diffrently Ive seen guys who need 5000 calories and 300 grams of protien to bulk and then Ive seen guys who need only 2800 calories but as you are just starting the main things you need to do are eat sleep and train like an animal.
As a side note I have found creatine very helpful in recovery times. There are times where I would deadlift less than 24 hrs after my last squat session and belive did creatine save my but then.
