I asked much the same thing when the game was still new, and many people told me that the singleplayer was very much worth it. But i must admit I was never able to take the plunge. I hated the multiplayer so much in the MP beta..

I found the Multiplayer to be a huge down-turn from the original DoW. Where in the original games I had a sizable force at my disposal, in DoW2 I never had more than a handful of squads at a time. It felt to me like it was on a smaller scale than Company of Heroes, which is hard to fathom! I know it was done to make it more "tactical", but for me it just wasn't fun and didn't make me feel it was 40k. Sure it has all the set-pieces but it couldn't grab me and immerse me like its predecessors.

I never got it. Heard it required both a Steam activation AND GfW Live, so I just punted. I've heard the campaign is fun though.

I doubt it will be that good.

I too, tested the MP beta of this, as well as playing the original DoW at release and being in one of the bigger & better known clans out there (our second head of clan is still a moderator at the relic forums)

DoW 2 is much more focused on micro. You have to be able to micro everything, whereas DoW had macro as well.

I prefer the large engagements, squads of 3 (3?!!!! Smallest allowed is 4 and a sarge!) but I enjoy the occasional game of it.

Is it worth the release price? no. But if you can find it cheap now, its worth a play if you enjoy the universe (not lore though, the game just kills lore. Oh yeah, a handful of marines can defeat a hive fleet >_>)

Not as good as table top though.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Space Marine Chapter Master with Twin Lightning claws to paint.

Kinda like it, but its mostly for the competitive... Other than that its great, squads of 3 and 4 are only space marines, because they are supposed to be elite, you know?

    Gah!

At least its only an extra 5 points for the second one.

Unless you go Black Templars like me...

If you can throw me a pic of some of your stuff.

my skill right now extends to base coating. Oh yeah!

How long ago was that? My codex's only go back to 3rd ed.

    Rogue Trader / 1st ed.

I'm only just starting to paint again. Get to do about a miniature a month.

My preferred technique is base coat, colour, strong highlights (for hard surfaces armour/tyranids),dry brush (for furs) then ink/wash. For organic/furs etc this gives a nice glossy look. To reduce the gloss revers the order of the highlights/dry brush with the ink wash OR do another highlight (brighter, thinner line).

I don't have a steady enough hand to do anything but basecoat right now.

I'm trying for a crimson, I spent about 6 hours at the GW. I got the basecoat of my commander done, and the first layer of red on parts of his legs.

    A fine day it was!

    We're getting off topic though

I base coated in the base coat of the faction. Some people usually paint black/white before they even start on red/etc for the base colour.

I always made my own chapters colour wise.

Having your own chapter colour scheme is no big deal, I have my own for my chapter (fluff is made etc)

But the undercoat is 99% of the time black or white. Thats what undercoat is. Especially with the new range of paints. Back in the day it was Chaos black undercoat then since I was blood angels, blood red. Done!

Now, its undercoat black, then mechrite red on one half, then red gore, then blood red and blazing orange.

Other half is a bit more complicated, but simple.

Some people have basecoated in red, but I don't know of any other colour.

Undercoat black, then basecoat with primary color, and lighten gradually the upper armor and edges.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Usually, to lighten just take some basecoat paint, and add a small amount of white (or yellow, if basecoat is red), mix and apply to highlight a large area, then add more white(or yellow) and apply to progressively smaller sections and edges. Don't worry too much about how it looks up close, the gradually progression won't be visible from the table edges. Never did get the hang of inks and washes.

Red is tricky. Highlighting with white will get you pink, and that's only good for harlequins. Black primer will dull red unless the paint is thick, and white primer isn't much better. I had a jar of Ral Partha paint from ages ago that was really thick, never could get the Citadel reds to do anything for me. It's a miracle I was able to finish my WFB Khornate army...

Red highlight with yellow/orange mixed into the red. Also use yellow/orange washes or a brown wash over the highlights to blend.

My first terminators (from the first Space Hulk) where Mithril Silver with a Blue Ink...

I think you need to remove the 'e' to correctly identify that faction, pevergreen.

Does anyone know when the Free DLC, the Last Stand comes out?

I am looking forward to it, reminds me of similar ones from other games, such as Warcraft 3.
