Undercoat black, then basecoat with primary color, and lighten gradually the upper armor and edges.
Usually, to lighten just take some basecoat paint, and add a small amount of white (or yellow, if basecoat is red), mix and apply to highlight a large area, then add more white(or yellow) and apply to progressively smaller sections and edges. Don't worry too much about how it looks up close, the gradually progression won't be visible from the table edges. Never did get the hang of inks and washes.
Red is tricky. Highlighting with white will get you pink, and that's only good for harlequins.
Black primer will dull red unless the paint is thick, and white primer isn't much better. I had a jar of Ral Partha paint from ages ago that was really thick, never could get the Citadel reds to do anything for me. It's a miracle I was able to finish my WFB Khornate army...
