Thread: auto unit building?

    Default auto unit building?

    Hi

I have MTW gold v2.01, and I have a big problem.

I find that my castles etc are building units on their own. There's no unit icon showing in the unit-build window, and nothing no units are pending, but after every turn I find a random new unit built at my settlements.

I cant find any mention of an auto-build function in the menu, so is this a bug? Does anybody else get this, and is there a fix?

    Cheers
    Zarks

ps - i'm playing with normal difficulty.

This feature is probably set in your minimap campaign options. On the right side of your minimap in the campaign screen, there is a grey bar with an arrow in it. Click that, and it will show a list of checkboxes for various campaign options. Depending on how much of a micromanager you are, you can turn off most of them.

Here's a screenie with my standard settings...

Mine"s usually the same except for the "Tidy up units"one. Having the boxes on the left makes the game more chaotic (for me) but more interesting - your decisions are really on the line.

zarker: Yeah, sounds like you have the "auto-train units" option clicked on. Just go the menu drone mentioned, and unclick that option.

Generally speaking, the only option I enable is autosave. I'll occasionally enable "show computer moves" as well, but not very often.

Am I the only one using auto-tax? After they fixed it in one of the patches it's a really good micro-manage saver.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

    I'm using auto-tax too...

You might make a little less than optimal florins per turn in the more troublesome provinces, but it saves a great deal of micro-management.

    - Auto-tax here as well.

I see it like this; my barons can watch over the land, whilst I, as a medieval tyrant, can pore over the maps and work out where I shall plan my next victory.

Quick further question; Anyone use auto assign titles?

I don't auto anything, and my set up is just like Drone's except for the "Display non-critical messages" - I really don't need a seperate parchment for each watch tower that goes up every turn, I'd much rather have the one single "Buildings completed" report (and same for agent reports etc...)

However, I do like to have "Show computer moves" as it gives a good over-view of what everyone's up to - it's a lot more graphic when you can see all the AI troop movements when they are amassing an invasion force. Mind you, it can take a long while if you have the whole map revealed

I have auto assign and auto tax on, I hate the micro-manageing side of MTW. It's easily the worst thing in the game.

I Auto-tax from day one, really no need to do that yourself unless you believe that loyalty and land enheritage from foreign princesses is related in any kind (Yeah, right ).

Once my empire is secured (usually past turn 40-50) I turn on auto-title. When I "obtain" a province, or construct a building with a command or acumen bonus, I manually assign that specific title. Titles are only assigned after the end of turn.

I never, ever, auto-build. Not units, not buildings. Why do you want to do that? Though I sometimes praise the AI, it never knows MY plan.

Reassuringly. Had it known I often have no plan, I would have been invaded a century ago.

What I would like to have on auto, and sourly misses, is the option to auto-move new units to a designated province, say for example all camels trained in Egypt shows up in Morocco after 1-2 turns.

"Show moves" I always use. If I get bored I can always press "spacebar", whereas sometimes you want to know what's going on.

I also usually have untidy units, you know what I mean. I especially hate it when it auto-merges two siege crews and scrap one perfectly working cannon. When I have absolutely no siege engines, then the option is on. I find it too work-like to manually merge elite units to assemble one or two really nice regiments. Murphys law ensures that unit is the target of mayheim in the next battle anyways.

It's been my experience that auto-tidy will screw you over when it comes to upgraded units. Maybe it's just me, but it always seems to merge armoured units into unarmoured ones and such. So I leave it off. I like to micromanage anyway, I'd prefer to write up the reassignment papers for each individual soldier if I could.

Drop me in the "micro-managers basket" and call me obsessive, but I prefer not to leave anything in the hands of the AI other than the AI factions...

It might be a character flaw, but I actually enjoy raising and lowering taxes....and I like the fact that a wrong decision (in terms of how far I push the local populace) can result in rebellion against the tyrant....oh dear, that would be me...

As for merging units, well sometimes I will do this if the enemy are likely to be attacking a province held by a battle weary army, but generally I prefer to re-train and re-equip units without merging, on the theory that 2 really good experienced units are better than one great unit....

Yeah, an auto-rally system would've been nice.

As it is, there is partial (albeit imperfect) solution: If you drag-and-drop a unit from one province to another province that's a fair distance away, then that unit will automatically make its way to the target province. You can do the same thing with agents as well.

Same here. Auto-merge/tidy always seems to wind up doing about the exact opposite of what I would've preferred. I long ago discovered that I was generally better off leaving that option disabled.

heh heh, it can be quite amusing taxing the peasants to their back teeth, especially when rebellion already looks likely. I mean, if you can't avoid the rebellion, you may as well make a little cash on the side

I also like to give some provinces "tax holidays", and make a point of reducing all taxes to "normal" as soon as my economy is sound. The first hundred years or so, though, it's generally "very high" across the empire, but not necessary once trade gets running properly.

Very true - I've "lost" more than enough upgrades that way.

I've also found the worst thing possible for an empire - assuming you have debug (-ian) mode on, is to hit the "A" key. This puts it into auto-run, and the next thing you know, all your carefully constructed stacks in strategic provinces are ripped apart and recombined at the opposite end of the empire according to some mysterious plan that seems to make no sense at all

How does auto-assign-titles work? Does it go to the gu with the highest acumen? dread? Combo?

I'd like it if it went to the highest acumen, but sometimes I would want the option to give a poor rebellious province to a dumb viking with four skulls.
