Hey, we are belgians! At our independance day, the 21st of July, we stay at home and drink beer. The day after we deny that we watched the military parade (where you can admire the beer bellies of our soldiers and police officers) on television and we make fun of our king and his speech.

I can post my annual Statue of Liberty picture!

The picture was taken and composed by Arthur Mole. It was shot from a specially constructed wooden tower. Not immediately apparent, is that Lady Liberty is composed of a whopping 18000 people. Mole plays with perspective. By placing far more people in the back, it looks like the Statue is photographed head on. Whereas if one looks at the baracks in the background, one sees that she is shot from a large angle.

Worthy of note is, that if one stands too close, or focuses on a single individual, the picture means nothing. From ground level, it is but a crawling mass of people. It is only by pulling back, by viewing from a distance, that this mass gains meaning.
If instead one only looks from a distance, the picture doesn't mean anything either. Jut another picture of the Statue of Liberty. It is only the realisation that Liberty is composed of individuals, that gives the work meaning. Liberty here is not an abstract, nor a dead statue, but a living concept, made up out of individuals. And of nothing but individual people. Liberty does not extend beyond the living people that make her up - she's not an abstract. Nor are there any persons visible outside of the Statue anywhere, for Liberty is all encompassing.

E Pluribus Unum. Liberty by the people, through the people, from the people.

The persons that together here form Lady Liberty are troops, photographed in July of 1918, many of whom shortly after were shipped over the Atlantic to aid France.

    Happy Independence Day.

    Happy birthday 'merica.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

Exactly my plan for today. Plus burning some perfectly good beef on an open fire in the backyard.

Thanks all. Happy Independence to Americans!
