Default Going back to MTW from M2

    Hi all,

I've been playing TW since Shogun:Total War first came out, and I have been playing M2TW for a while now. I Always remember that the first medieval total war, was more challenging than M2TW and was kind of better, except the graphics aren't as flashy.

ITs been so long, and I was curious if anyone here can recommend a particular MOD or some patches or something that would improve going back to the original MTW ?

    thanks guys,

    Welcome back, PrestigeX.

As for mods, it depends on what you want. If you want to keep the original medieval setting, then the most popular are Wes' MedMod, BKB, and XL (with many XL players using Tyberius' add-on). The latter two can be found in the Engineers Guild, and Wes' mod can be found at the link provided. All three mods have been played extensively and are well-regarded.

There's also some excellent "total conversion" mods which change the game's setting and/or location. Foremost among these are Samurai Warlords, Hellenic TW, Pike & Musket, and Ancient TW (which can all be found in the Org's MTW Hosted Mods section).

One can only put up with the smoking hot, but exceedingly dumb, blonde for so long. Welcome back!

You could also try the Pocket Mod (Martok is too modest to suggest it himself, it's in his sig), or you could try the Samurai Warlords mod, a port of STW to the expanded MTW engine with other improvements.

^^ I've recently upgraded to XL and it's a big (but good) step from VI; I'd start there!
I haven't tried the pocket mod but from what i've heard it's highly recommended too.

Ha! It's been a while, but I think Martoks old MTW analogy is applicable here...

I welcome you back to MTW: VI with open arms. I am currently out of action because my MTW Gold DVD is cracked (been like it quite a while, but recently the cracks have gotten larger and therefore I'm afraid of it kind of exploding in the DVD drive and all that nasty stuff).

I think we could go with another analogy for MTW, though...that she's like the ship in Event Horizon - she doesn't want us to leave. She won't let us leave. We're her crew. Heck, I keep going back to MTW time and time again, no matter how hard I try to 'escape.' So, welcome, you're now one of us...
I believe in a society without rules, laws and regulations. A society where there are only ideas - strict ideas that must be followed to by the letter - and any failure to comply is punishable by death. This would be no dictatorship or police state, no one would be living in terror. It would merely be a 'reassessment of one's preferences,' people living in 'not-so-optimistic security.' So, welcome, those who are 'longing to be blindly obedient and loyal, unbeknownst to them.'

    THanks for all the input,

in the meantime I was playing my Version 1.00 MTW, as england. I started to get the hang of it again.

I really like how the crusades work and just the feel, its much more of a struggle, and england's Billmen actually kick some you know what in this game , and the longbows take a while to earn (starting EARLY) .

Anyway, I tihnk i'll be giving the XL mod a try, thanks everyone.

XL is definitely worth a shot. It doesn't change a great deal of game dynamics, except adding enough factions and changing certain unit specs to give a new game play every time.

I would say it goes further than that. XL fixes the imbalance between trade and farming income so that the player can't just rack up a million florins with ease, and it additionally gives the AI a bit more strength and staying power. Furthermore, the AI will now actually try to build navies, though certain factions still tend to do better with it than others. However, the seas are no longer just an open highway for invasion anymore, especially once/if the Almos/Spanish come out victorious in Iberia.

**returns home strapped to the saddle of his camel**

After playing RTW on and off for the last year, I would say that I have warmed to the new engine somewhat. I can now finally see the point in the new campaign map design but I do still think it needs masses of improvement. I haven't played M2TW yet, I own the game because I managed to pick it up cheap but it won't run on my system because I don't have an SSE2 enabled CPU.

The learning curve is indeed quite steep. You can grasp how battles work overnight and if you're an experienced STW/MTW vet, battles won't provide much of a challenge, but the complicated settlement management, traits system, and movement points system, are rather tiresome and difficult to get the hang of.

The reason I play it and will probably move on to M2TW, is because I've played MTW quite literally to death, but I'm under no illusions as to which is the better game engine and which has the better AI.

That is the same analogy I always use when it comes to R or M2 vs MTW or STW. If only the AI was better!

Yes, yes...brilliant analogy...oh, RTW and MTW2, I miss the commonalities shared (but taken for granted) when I once loved STW and MTW...

I would dearly love to go back to playing MTW. If only it would work with my new damned videocard! Its infuriating. When you upgrade your rig you dont expect to lose the ability to play the older, better games.

@Cynwulf: You got just vanilla Medieval 2, right? I only ask because of Kingdoms including SecuROM, and I'm pretty sure your feelings on that piece of....software are similar to my own.

Indeed. For that very reason, I'm extremely nervous at the possibility of upgrading my video card for Empire Total War. I'm hoping I won't have to upgrade at all, but my computer will already be nearly two years old when ETW is finally released....

Yes I'm aware of that particular piece of crapware in the Kingdoms expansion which is why I only have M2TW. It's unlikely that I'll pay M2TW this year though anyway but I wanted to get hold of the vanilla version before it became hard to come by.

I'm also returning to MTW now (not that I ever owned, let alone played, M2TW), after finding out that I can actually play it again. On my old computer it worked fine, just that the machine was too old and would get overheated every 5 minutes unless you played during winter with your window wide open (which is why I stopped posting in the Pics & history thread around February/March). After returning to these forums however I again felt the addiction and the urge to play once again.

My new computer wouldn't let me play thanks to the NVIDIA 8600N graphics card, and our family laptop wouldn't let me play it because of the NVIDIA graphics card. My last resort was our stationary machine, dating from approximately 3000 BC, and to my surprise it worked. Had a few disastrous campaigns in VI yesterday, but I'm currently downloading XL. Just like you, I fear I shall never be free.

The one thing I'd wish they'd done more with is Historical Campaigns in M:TW. Think something like Command and Conquer Red Alert - how badass would that be?

Played Rome, liked bits, didn't like the battles (I'm on a moutain with a better general, you attack me and you get the better ground???) or the strat map, all style, little substance. So I'm back to playing MTW with all my provices set to v. low taxes (more of a challenge)...

Anywho can anyone tell me what VI is...

The reason I went back to MTW from Rome and M2 was the fact that the transition to 3-D just took the whole atmosphere out of the game, and IMO that's what made it MTW and indeed Shogun, great.
