Thread: Olympic Games Beijing 2008

  1. #1

    Default Olympic Games Beijing 2008

    Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Anyway, personally looking forward for 100 m finals, can't wait for it. I hope for a new world records and it looks like that might actually happen. Usain Bolt holds men's record 9.72, he did that on 31 May 2008. Also looking forward to see finals of 200 m and 400 m. 4x100 m and 400 m relays are also nice, but usually teams don't know how to pass the damn thing, so it looks terrible. Swimming no doubt, sharks in the water. Basketball, definitely following all teams and all players, hoping for intense and clean basketball. Maybe United States will win this time, Argentina won in Greece. Football of course, but Clubs (I mean money) messed that all up by not allowing players to represent their national teams. What else, will be looking tennis too.

Alright, looking good, I'm hoping for good and fair competition out there. Hope they nail all the doping users.

I'm looking forward to the Taekwondo matches, first and foremost. After that, probably basketball.

Gah, I actually had plans of going back to China and attend the Olympics since the stadiums are actually quite close to my old home in Beijing, but alas, way too much stuff to do here and could never make up the time lost going back.

Ill look out for the football, usually intrested in the sprinting events, apart from that only desperation and boredom can encourage me to watch the rest...

Yeah, the government is desperate to ensure that pollution isn't so bad that you can't see the top of the stadium! It will be funny to see what they will try if it looks like it will rain on the opening ceremony. I have heard that they have special artillery which will cause the clouds to rain, stationed outside the city.

I really wouldn't want to be a Chinese athlete who is a favourite to win, the pressure would be horrendous, and if you fail.......

I love how, despite the 100k police, 100k soldiers, thousands of CCTV cameras, checkpoints, permits&passes, surface to air missiles and serious $$$, a South Korean TV crew wandered right into the main stadium and filmed the opening ceremony practice, then uploaded it onto the net! Reminds me of the $300 million APEC "Great Wall of Sydney", which was breached with the aid of a colour printer, sunglasses and rental cars!

I'm actually in China right now, but because my home city is like a bajillion miles from Beijing (only 2 hours to Shanghai though), I won't be seeing it there

Still, I got like five channels constantly broadcasting Olympic news so I will watch some of it... (table tennis ftw! )

I'm in Beijing. Apart from the improved weather, the games have made my life much more inconvenient.

Saw something strange last night... stars. (I don't even see them in London... hmm...)

On the other hand, it does mean that there are plenty more clueless tourists to make fun of. The joys of being an old hand expat.

Looking forward to the rowing events. Should have some killer races in the M4- for sure, and the M8+ is always impressive. And I'll be keeping my eye on Drysdale in the M1x; he's had an interesting build-up to the Olympics, the guy is pure class.

9,69 new world record by Usain Bolt. Beautiful run, so superior that you have time to salute while you're making that record. This event was definitely worth to wait for. Makes me wonder, when will someone go under 9.60.

Bolt was unholy impressive. In one of his qualifying runs he literally coasted to a sub 10 second 100m by slacking the last half of the race. The 100m guys are usually all glory boys, bragging about how easy it is for them to win, but Bolt is the first man I've seen actually make it look truly easy for himself all the way through.

NBC's Olypmic coverage is hideous. Tivo means I get about 20 minutes of actual sports out of the four hours of commercials and non-stop BS that NBC pumps out, and lucky at that much. I mean, why did they show an hour of interviews with the women's fencing winners and 15 seconds of the fencing matches?

Congrats to him, he deserved it. Unless they add more events, this record will never be beat.
