I need a quick reply, gentlemen...

I'm playing the xl mod for medieval: total war... which buildings do I need to build longbowmen in wales?

If it's anything like regular M:TW you have to wait till 1205, not build any one building.

Hey Nik! Long time no see.

Aside from having to wait until 1205, I believe you need a bowyer's guild.

Weird, it's not on my tech tree... O_o...

The era restrictions on units do not appear on the tech tree. This is because in the first version of the game there were none IIRC.

No, there wouldn't be. The unit side of the tech tree doesn't give any indication that some units are era-dependent. Cynwulf is also correct in that there was a bug in the unpatched version of vanilla MTW allowed you to train any of your faction's units as long as you had the requisite buildings, regardless of era. Thus, the English could train Longbows in the Early period, and the Byzantines could recruit Varangian Guards in the Late period.

Heh. I suddenly remember being very confused as a newbie when, after installing the 1.1 patch, my Egyptians suddenly couldn't train Mamluk Cavalry anymore (it was only around 1150 at the time). I was finally forced to ask about it in the forums here when I couldn't figure out what the heck had happened.

I know that, I mean it's not there. I went down the Bowyer tree and there's no Longbowman on it.

The Welsh longbow unit requires a bowyers guild in Wales, any faction. The regular longbow unit requires a bowyers guild too, but anywhere, English faction only. Neither unit is available in Early.

If you have other questions about the stats of XL units or how to get units in XL, I recommend my shamelessly self-promoted XL unit guide. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...59#post1866559
In those simple times there was a great wonder and mystery in life. Man walked in fear and solemnity, with Heaven very close above his head, and Hell below his very feet. God's visible hand was everywhere, in the rainbow and the comet, in the thunder and the wind. The Devil too raged openly upon the earth; he skulked behind the hedge-rows in the gloaming; he laughed loudly in the night-time; he clawed the dying sinner, pounced on the unbaptized babe, and twisted the limbs of the epileptic. A foul fiend slunk ever by a man's side and whispered villainies in his ear, while above him there hovered an angel of grace . . .

    Heh.

It's a flattering thought, but no. I can assure you I've made just about every mistake there is to make in this game. (Just ask me about the time I invaded Naples with my Spanish king, and what I had to pay for ransom after he was captured by the Pope -- talk about learning the hard way to *not* launch naval invasions with your faction leader....)

That's odd. In my tech tree (I still have the original, believe it or not), the Longbow is the 5th unit listed under Missiles, right alongside the Pavise Crossbows and Arbalests. I'm guessing you have a different tech tree, perhaps?

Got the one off that topic not to long ago, strange.

Hmm. Strange, indeed. I could've sworn that one was just as complete as my own.

To be honest, I can't quite help myself. Whether it's a game, toy, piece of equipment, etc., I've always done my level best to hold onto all accessories and keep them as intact as possible for as long as possible -- I still have the original manuals & tech trees for most of my games, and in not a few cases, even the original packing materials inside the box! I'm (obviously) a little obsessive about it.

Still have my original as well. Truth be told, I was a little miffed that the VI tree came only in pdf and not as a physical page. The pdf is nice, portable, and "replaceable", but you can't look at it while playing and it's really small if you print it out.

I concur. It's just not the same as having an actual (and legible) piece of paper to look at.
