    Hi Aries
See the last discussion on this here. My opinion still stands BTW.

An opinion I happen to second, by the way. Sorry Aries, but while it's a decent idea in theory, in practice I believe a reputation system would hurt more than it would help.

Indeed, the TWC is actually a good (or not-so-good) example of this: For every helpful and/or knowledgeable poster over there, there seems to be at least two more l33t-speaking, whinging, smack-talking jackes. Yet the latter enjoys just as much "reputation" as the former.

I will always oppose a mechanism that rewards/glorifies such people....especially here.

What need is there for a system-supported gauge of "reputation?" We have stratified membership and the Hall of Fame. Personally I find such mechanisms superficial, and potentially misleading--more often indicative of clique-ish popularity than of significant merit. Our own judgment, based on observation and consideration over time, suffices. Such systems encourage insincere attention ... mongering.

    I vote "No, thank you."
    Be intent on loyalty
While others aspire to perform meritorious services
    Concentrate on purity of intent
While those around you are beset by egoism

I agree that a reputation system is not needed. As a new member I learned quickly enough which members are most helpful or interesting without needing a guide. I suspect a reputation system would be as crude a measure of worth as post count (I assume the system is something along the lines of, if you like a post someone makes, you have the option to give them a point or something which increases their score?)

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

We should have reputation based on postcount and join date, making me the best member here... this is proof of the accuracy of my system

Hey, we recognise your brilliance.....ahem.....no seriously.......and the contributions of others....but therein lies the problem (as I see it anyway). As PBI noted, we all come to learn of other orgahs who may contribute useful information, or who may entertain or amuse, or even those who are simply enthusiastic but completely unskilled (just wanted to get a category for myself!).

I appreciate the thought behind the suggestion (offering some recognition to a wider spread of orgahs), but I don't see that "reputations" need to be measured and weighed in some arbitrary quantifiable way...or even can be....

A Reputation system really is not needed in a place like this, HOF is good enough.

I've frequented a few forums with such points ("Kudos") systems in place in the past. It seems to have no positive effect and is rarely worthwhile. Some forums also have a "thanks" system, whereby you thank someone that provided you with a solution. It just might have a place on tech support forums (though I'm yet to be convinced) but that's about it. Such a points system would be entirely unsuitable for this site and would amount to little more than popularity points with which to massage egos.

For the record: I'm against any kind of points system, post count related merit/rank or anything that causes competitiveness among members, which distorts what the .org is all about (it's certainly not a race nor a competition). I'm also against that which causes cliques and groups to form, such as the social groups we have had since the forum software was updated. I would not miss those at all.
