    Well, back in the day, the assassin avatars were used, and now it is just traditionally the moderator who dons the assassin garb.

    It had something to do with ninja editing posts, or the first moderators used them.

    Take a search in the backroom, it came up recently.
    NB: Recently could mean within the last two years. I have a distinct memory of it being explained though.
