Background noise

I hear this constant noise in my head, and I think its whispering, telling me to walk where the wind blows...

OK but seriously, this thread is about having a TV/radio/something on in the background. Whatever I'm doing, I just cannot concentrate without this background noise. If I sit down to eat something and the TV isn't on, then I just cannot eat anything and I have to put it on or I feel really uncomfortable. I actually watched the JEREMY KYLE show this morning while eating my breakfast.

Same goes with homework/revision. Cause of the timing of when I do mine, I often end up watching Coronation Street or Eastenders, I even know some of the characters names.

My brain just doesn't 'click in' if there's no noise. Like the other night my mum swithced the TV off because my brother decided he had to do his homework at the table where I was eating my dinner, and so she switched the TV off and I was just sitting there.... it feels so awkward, like you notice every little movement you make. I gave up and went to the kitchen, at least its not so bad when there's no people around.

So does anyone else find this?

Yes exact same thing.

I cannot eat without a TV or at least a radio on and sleep much easier with a TV on or the lights on.

I always make sure I have something good to watch while eating.

7 years of living in the UK did not alleviate this either.

When I moved from London to a little Midlands town the quietness at night was so...loud (for need of a better word) that was driving me nuts.

I like to have background stuff going on as well. When sleeping, I usually have a fan or humidifier running, if it's too quiet I can't sleep. When I'm home just mucking about, I like to have the TV going, I'll pick something I don't have to pay attention to. If I'm gaming or reading, I'll have a sports channel tuned up. When I was a student, I always had music on in the background when I studied. Not sure why I like this, but the advantage is that I can now tune just about anything out. Street construction, people blabbing away on cellphones, friends' annoying rugrats, all just a faint buzzing noise in my ears.

It doesnt matter if you ve lived the rest of your life in the UK Rasoforos. Many other Greeks i personally know have this and symptomatically were actually Athenians...
