    Default Turns =/= Years?

    Hey there,

I'm new here and have recently got my hands on a copy of M2TW and Kingdoms (having played M1TW and Viking Invasion for years). I love the game, but have noticed one thing that's kind of annoying, and I was just wondering if it is indeed a bug, or something that isn't in fact wrong, but merely appeared so to me.

What I'm talking about are of course the turns. I like how it switches between winter and (presumably) summer each turn, hinting that a turn actually represents one or two seasons, rather than a whole year. This is great, but I was just wondering if the game counter counts turns differently.

I haven't directly observed years going up faster than they should, but when looking at the Family Tree of my faction, I notice some really whacked-out stuff. For example, there will be a general who died in battle in, let's say, 1218, with a son who 57 years old... in 1280.

I know I'm kind of rambling and I don't really know how to word what I'm thinking, so I'm going to post this as is in the hope of some replies from people who understand what I mean, before I try to elaborate on what I'm talking about myself.

    Reece.

    Welcome to the Org.

Turns in the game are supposed to represent 1.5 years; the upshot is that the date advances by three years every two years, and turns alternate between summer and winter. However, M2TW is based on the RTW engine, in which turns are 0.5 years long, and some features of M2TW were not updated to 1.5 years instead of 0.5; most notably the age of characters. So characters age by 1 year every 2 turns, but the date advances by three years, essentially meaning characters live for well over a hundred years.

There are several mods which fix this, I believe Lands to Conquer and VanillaMod both do, though you may want to check. Alternatively you can fix it yourself quite easily by setting the game date to advance at the old 0.5 years rate, I believe you just have to change a number in descr_strat (in the Data folder). Bear in mind this will mean events like the Mongols and gunpowder will take forever to arrive, so if this is a problem for you you might want to change the dates in descr_events.

Which Kingdoms campaign are you playing?
    IIRC:
    Regular METW2: 1 turn = 2 years
    Americas: 1 turn = 1 year
    Brittania: 1 turn = 1 year
    Crusades: 1 turn = 2 years

You can change these values in the script file that sets up the game.

    anweRU is correct.

M2TW does not run by 1.5 ypt unless you mod it that way (and I wouldn't see why anyone would want to mod to that strange number)
Want gunpowder, mongols, and timurids to appear when YOU do?
Playing on a different timescale and never get to see the new world or just wanting to change your timescale?

One minor detail I forgot: even though 1 turn = 2 years in several campaigns, the characters will still age 1 year per turn for turn >= 1 year. Hence the odd situation you had...

Like PBI was talking about, are there any mods (and/or detailed on how I could do it myself) that would resolve these problems, namely the one in the regular Grand Campaign (to be specific, I'd prefer characters to age by the proper 0.5 per turn, and other affected aspects of the game)? Admittedly I haven't gotten around to trying any of the Kingdoms campaigns in great detail yet, but if the problems are the same/similar for them, it would indeed be useful to know now.

    Thanks again, Reece.

Ah, thanks. I sent you a PM with a query regarding that.
