Default Computer shutting down by itself

    Howdy,

My rig has taken to turning itself off and I have no idea why. It's an E6700 dual-core/2GB RAM/8800GTS 640 MB video in a very well ventillated Antec 900 case.

The only time it turns itself off is if I'm playing a game. I can leave it on for days and all is fine, watch movies, download, burn CDs, anything, but if I so much as play a game of Risk - I like Risk -guaran-friggin'-teed the machine will shut down after ten or fifteen minutes.

I have AVG 8.5 running every day as well as the new free Ad-Aware and I use the Clean Cache program every week or two.

If it's overheating, wouldn't other things shut it down besides a ten-year old game of Risk that can run on my toaster and probably uses 1MB of video memory?

    Thanks.

I don't know much about it, but could overheating be an issue? Is there any nvidia utility you could DL that would give you the card temp?

Set speed fan and check the temperatures.
If it's actually overheating just like this, I'd check all the fans, clean the fans and coolers and make sure everything is properly attached.

If it's not overheating, then my "expertise" arrives at some kind of dead end where I'd suspect a hardware failure of for example the graphics card. Which reminds me of Whacker's famous words that the 8800 series and some other NVidia cards may be made of bad material that can fail after some time (months, years) etc. Just a suspicion, I'd check the temperatures and interior of the case first.

perhaps you are bumping it while playing?

on my other computer, if i lean, sometimes the chair will touch the computer in the perfect place in a corner(where no button is btw) and re-start the computer. but i only lean when i play games, so maybe this is it?

Had in on my previous laptop. Was due to heating. Had to clear it out (dust etc) and it was better afterward (not completely fixed as the internal fan was broke too). So I would say its a heating problem or alternatively, a sensor problem.

I think you're probably all spot on. My machine does get pretty dusty and doghairy down on the floor under the abominable filth of my desk. It hasn't overheated before but that not to say it's not what's happening now.

I'll do a Searh & Rescue. I'll let you know.

    Thanks.

Did the Search & Rescue. Took it apart and I swear half my Labrador was in the case. Gah!

Hit it with the hair dryer and Shop Vac and did a serious de-dusting. So far so good.

    Thanks!

Hey, if that doesn't work. It could have auto set in your bios to turn off after a certain heat. My computer was set to turn of at 81c. Check that if you get the chance.

Thanks Beirut-sama, for bringing it up, and Whacker & Husar for the solution. Our craplet does the same thing as well. I think a full clean-up is due - after Sunday.
