I've been noticing this for a little while that Roman Legionaires fair better at not dying versus phalanxes than regular hoplites do with guard mode on. Is this due to the light spear trait giving -4 against other infantry or some other effect?

Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.
