Default Say goodbye to anyone! We're all gonna die thanks to the UN.

Thank you for the Codex Alimentarius which is going to make natural products as politically incorect as white, heterosexual men have become after the human rights acts force employers here to hire a gipsy or an immigrant.
This mongrolisation of our food supply is going to increase the frequency of endocrinological issues, sterility and stress-related disseases.

The evil in Codex is plain to see. It has been rejected by US phisicians and South Africa. Opposition to it costs the EU 127 mil. $ per year in fines and penalties to the goverments of the US and CANADA.

    This Codex just might:

    a) label mint and garlic as drugs

    b) place vitamins on prescription lists

    c) encourage more and more GMO's on the market

    d) lower the standards for organic farming

So....We're all dead. Hear it, we're all dead. And we have the UN to thank for that.

So the UN is shoving GMO's down your throat, depriving you of your vitamins and garlic and you still think this is a joke?

I don't think Fragony was really trying to joke around, Cronos Impera (or at the very least, that wasn't his primary goal). Rather, I believe he was hinting that a link to this story would be helpful for the rest of us so we can see what you're talking about.

As for me, I am sick to death of the GM and organic food crazes, so I welcome UN with open arms. And I am likewise sore from all the quackery about vitamins and how we should swallow them by handfuls. Bollox. Vitamins will not cure you, and if you get as much as twice the recommended amount of some of those vitamins, you will have negative symptoms. Overdose on thrice the regular amount, and you will have a medical condition. Yet so few actually know about this...

My parents were a part of those who bought into all this BS. my mother would try to shove those demonic pills down our throats, of every vitamin, herb, mineral, and similar detritus. Then it turned out my father was suffering from an overdose of B6 and B12, with among all the other symptoms, his nervous system was being destroyed. And he did not even take the vitamin supplements. His stubbornness for once actually did him some good. Ever since then, my mother has been more careful, but she still advocates the force-feeding of echinacea and Vitmain C to cure illnesses or prevent swine flu. God, I loathe the ignorance.

Thankfully, my parents are very educated, both with two master's degrees, but their understanding of chemistry and biology is simply embarrassing.

So anyway, what is wrong with GM or cloned meat? Are the "bad genes gonna get in your stomach and do bad things" as one college student once explained to me (I struggled to contain either laughter or tears)?

Well, it appears that we are talking about this - but I can't see any recent news that would provoke the Outrage-o-meter into overload.

Its texts are developed and maintained by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a body that was established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Commission's main aims are stated as being to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the international food trade. The Codex Alimentarius is recognized by the World Trade Organization as an international reference point for the resolution of disputes concerning food safety and consumer protection.

If they shove it down my throat I won't have to bother with the whole eating thing myself.

The controversy over genetically modified crops is that there's a possibility of mutations that make them poisonous to us or destructive to their environment. Or something like that.

Cloned meat? They're already selling it? I thought they just developed it a few years ago.

I don't really buy the scaremongering about GM foods with respect to human health. But there are serious concerns with: 1) cross-pollination and it's consequences under patent law, and 2) genetic diversity of feedstock.

This is the only reason that I am wary of them, but I did not mention in due to the fact it does not directly concern us. In other words, very few actually take note of this. Majority simply have fears that something could happen to themselves. That is what I was addressing. That is what the OP mentioned, which I wished to disprove.

As for the environmental concerns, the plants can be modified to reproduce asexually or to reproduce, but producing offspring that will inevitably die due to deliberately planted genetic errors. I have read papers on this aspect, and even with my rudimentary knowledge of biology, the concept is quite clear - nor are there people disproving those claims.

While we're on the subject of crops, who was the guy that managed to create an improved wheat plant that was more resistant to disease and easier to grow and potentially saved millions from starvation half a century ago because of the increased yield?

Genetic diversity is the biggest threat we face from GM food. We have been genetically modifying crops for millennia, and over that time genetic diversity has been a problem (case in point, the recent banana troubles), but GM foods threaten to take this loss of diversity to the next level. Hopefully the seed banks will be able to help us if a disease hits our homogeneous food crops.

GM foods are no better or worse for those who eat them. To explain it in a basic way, GM doesn't create new "stuff" it just rearranges the old "stuff" in plants so they grow better or whatever, and this affects us in no way since our digestive system breaks down plants into the "stuff" that makes them up.

Are you for real? The only way this could be more ridiculous is if you used the term "reverse racism".

Pretty much this. Most of the "natural" stuff is pushed by charlatans who are, at best, making profits off of not helping, and, at worst, actively dissuading people from treatments that could actually help them.

EDIT: I should probably clarify that I'm talking about herbal cures and the like. There's nothng wrong with organic foods, etc.

There is. Organic foods contain hidden germs of vegetarianism, wicca, Gaia worship, homeopathy, flying sauciness and superbluestuffery. These germs nestle inside your head and do nasty things to your brains, making you feel warm and happy and confident, neglect your children, have sex with animals and burn books.

Are people actually trying to argue that taking a basic multivitamin is bad for you? You sound like my little sister who used to complain abut not liking to take pills. While I agree that natural food is much better than a pill to get nutrients from, not everyone has the luxury. A reasonable multivitamin is a good start (I do agree about the B6/B12 crap which needs to be watched).

The UN can screech and scream all it wants; it can "do" nothing until it gets a viable enforcement arm. And that ain't gonna happen until ex-US President Obama gets selected as UN Secretary General and brings along a couple brigades of 101st Airborne with him.

So: Rest easy; your garlic and mints are safe until 2017*, at least.

*By then, the Frankenfood and herbal "cures"you will have consumed will have you pre-disposed to accept such nonsense.

I am arguing that people are quite ignorant and heavily misuse the multivitamin pills. For one, a number of individuals believe a Vitamin C or zinc overdose is the cure-it-all remedy to any sort of rhinovirus or influenza derivatives. That is obviously a pile of crap. In addition to this, others believe taking double doses of vitamins keeps their bodies in tip-top shape. More BS.

My third grievance is that the vitamins normally contain 100% or occasionally even more of almost every nutrient. Now, if you have a healthy diet, as as say, I do, then you are on a sure track of receiving some manner of vitamin poisoning, such as my father and the B-complex - and heck, my father does no even take vitamins, and he was told to cut down his B-vitamin intake. Now imagine if he did take supplements... A neurological and dermatological disaster.

And how exactly is the intake of vitamins from "natural" foodstuffs any distinct from pills? Same chemical substance. In addition, just what do you mean by "natural"? It irks me to no end when people use the term, as it has no real meaning, even worse that the more-definable "organic".

Food IS NOT a medicine. Thank you but I don't care for what I eat as long as it is not terribly unhealty, fatty or the like.

Also I don't see the problem with GMO's. As long as they taste fine and feed me, which is what food should be doing in the first place, I would gladly eat them. All that thing against them is nothing but obscurantist pseudo-Luddite hysteria.

Of course not . Romanians generally despise Roma people, as do Italians, although this is a rather broad generalisation. Nevertheless it is reflected in the sentiment of those two nations as a whole.

In any case, rom, I believe, is Gypsy for "man", which is a common name for most ancient ethnic people - generally ethnic groups are named after their own names for themselves, which usually means "people" or "men" in their own tongue.

Romanians, on the other hand are named for Romans, as the Romanian people self-style themselves as the true descendants of Romans. Ethnically and culturally it is crap, although their language is not too far from Latin, and it seemed to me that it was at least closer than Spanish, in my experience, as I have studied and spoke both of those langauges. Since French is rather farther off IMHO, I would say that Romanian could be the closest language to Latin after Italian.

You got it all wrong, although I doubt you are serious here, knowing your true nature, BtE. Food is not medicine in the sense that it does not necessarily cure you from infectious pathogens, but food ensures that you body is in a good condition, so that the immune system is...

Ah, screw it. Why waste time on you?!? You are obviously trolling and spamming here...

No, not really AP. You're the only who shows an uncanny concern for me and for portraying me in a bad light, as a spammer and a troll. I'm just posting innocently around, and *yawn* - I think you're the one who deserves to be reported for all of it, including this off-topic discussion about myself that you provoked.

Since the topic for discussion is still unclear, and in the vacuum we have descended to petty sniping, I think it is better for our health that the thread is closed.
