Having generally better stats and wielding weapons where you can blow their brains out, and having vigilante mode, are plenty of tools the live people have as an advantage over the zombies. Unless one has terrible combat rating or really bad dice rolls or no decent weapons, living people have significant advantages over the zombies.

The zombies are what makes roaming around alone, in cooperation, search, or defensive mode risky. These are great options that can greatly enhance your chances of living, but running into zombies negates those advantages because they strike first in such circumstances, and if there's a lot of them.... nom nom nom nom braaaaaaainnnnsss......
