    Default Paintball

    Hey everyone!

A few days ago, my little brother had his 10th birthday party at a paintball place on the marine base. Everyone had tons of fun, and there were a few times where it was just like "Wow. So this is what it sounds like to have bullets pinging and whizzing all around me."

So now me and my buddies are all getting paintball guns, and hopefully we'll have some fun with em. we have some woods right next to us we can easily use, and I am personally decking mine out for Channukah.

So, I was going to get an M-16 looking one (Alpha Black Tactical it's called) but we found one that seemed much more maneuverable and easier to use for 60 bucks. Even though I have to buy a new barrel and stock (plus I'm getting a laser sight!) it's still cheaper.

So anyone here play paintball a lot? Anyone have any tips, secrets, etc.?

I guess this could be a discussion thread.

    I love this sport

    painball in the night= pwnage.

i need to scrape up some money to get a new one. broke the barrel of my old one.
and get a small mirror. i was skeptical at first, but it great to see around corners, because you never know if someone is around that corner waiting for you. but you need to keep it clean though. more than once mine got ruined during a match because of paint.
yes i take paintball combat very seriously.

EDIT: also, since you will be fighting in wooded terrain, buy some camo. seriously. a ghillie suit is optimal, but it seriously reduces mobility. my friend uses a ghillie suit, and its awesome, except when hes not on your side, in which case its pure joy to pump him full of paint- when you find him.

Ummm ... given the average accuracy of a paintball gun, why on earth would you bother with a laser sight? I mean, I've played a lot of PB, and I can tell you that after a few hours your barrel is so fouled no amount of brushing and cleaning is going to restore your aim. I've been known to simply run up and start pumping rounds into an opponent from five feet away. It gets that bad.

I've never played pro or semi-pro, but I've played a lot. Talk to your teammates. Flank the opponent. Work as a team = win, pretend you're John Rambo = lose.

Buy lots of paintballs, smoke grenades, wear your own camo gear and belt kit; and, for the love of God, a decent pair of boots.

hence "New Barrel". firing without being able to aim really pissed me off, because i can be really accurate if i have some form of sights. unfortunately this gun came with iron sights that are blocked by the bolt.

PI, maybe the new barrel really does fix the accuracy problem, but here's how it goes in my experience:
    • You start to play, and you can aim reliably out to roughly fifty feet, depending on wind.
    • After an hour or two, a round bursts in the chamber.
    • From then on, unless you take a break and completely disassemble and clean the gun, your accurate aiming range becomes more like ten feet. Sometimes less.

Meh. The crowd that plays it (Well, that I've seen; I've done it three times) are often both excessively aggressive and take it way too seriously.

I'll second and third that last bit. People who take the game seriously tend to live in their mama's basements while the neighbors' dog tells them to kill. Never, ever play unless you have enough friends to lock out a field for your own crew.

I had to buy my own gun back in the day because there wasn't a paintball arena within a five hundred mile radius of where I lived. Tippman 98 custom, the AK47 of the paintball world, was perfect for woodsball anyway. Makes me want to dig it out of storage, good memories.

Sounds like fun, PI. I used to play A LOT back in the day in woods, abandoned houses, etc. You name it and we played there. I got out of it when I realized that I was spending 600+ customizing my gun and my friends started to play semi pro and the guys playing semi pro weren't people I wanted to associate myself with.

Have fun though! I started with a spyder with a freak kit (it's been so long, but I'm assuming this stuff still exists) and moved towards a customized impulse with an eye, sticky grips, and custom barrels.

BTW: Listen to Lemur as he is completely correct in what he is saying. I'd also highly recommend doning many layers of clothes and playing when you get a lot of snow.

Hehe, that is basically every non-nerd teen here, down in the South of US (Northwest Florida to be precise). Back when my parents used to force me to go to the local Baptist Church with them, practically half of "Bible Study" was spent discussing and planning the next paintball meet-up, going over how “awesum” the last ones were and what sorts of guns & modifications to those guns each kid had.

Paintball is a splendid game, but I avoid it like the plague here. Wrong types of people play it in the South. All of my close friends are nerds, and they are the only group of teens worth spending time with here.

    fix'd.

i dont believe in spending several hundred bucks on a recreational activity. i mean, if someone were to go pro, and make a living off of it, I see nothing wrong with spending your extra cash on gun modifications instead of an xbox.

basically, you dont buy a suit of medieval armor to play DnD, you don't buy full padding, helmet, and uniforms playing backyard football, you dont buy paintball guns over $200 for non-pro paintball.

    thats one of my mottos

And this is where the fun lies in the game. The smack talk/war stories aspect make it really great. You don't get this when the players don't know each other, and you have to deal with a lot of jackholes. There is a lot of similarity between paintball and multiplayer video games. LAN play is great, online play not so much.

Paintball is fun with friends. There, I've restated everything that's been said on the thread.

I haven't played too much of it. My greatest memories are of breaking the rules and getting away with it.

You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.

I disagree about playing with people with their own guns. It depends on what kind of guns they are, and what kind of people. Having your won gin saves a lot of money in the long run if you play a few times a year. They are also good for self defense, or shooting someone in the face with red paint so they think they are really shot...but thats another story

I keep my own gun, its a semi-auto from 1994 that is quite the antique. It looks almost like something from star wars, and its all metal and weights about 13 pounds. It's also compact. People usually laugh at me for bringing it, but i prefer it over the rifles.

What I hate are the people with the full autos. Thats just ain't cool to go to a public field and play against people with semis and you are walking around like jesse ventura in predator.

The small paintball field we go to has a final game called "Paint or Pain" as a way to use up the last of your ammo at the end of the day. You stay in the game until you either run out of paintballs or can't take getting nailed anymore and remove yourself from the game. A tip I learned in that game: don't hide behind a tree that is much thinner than you are...especially when finding yourself in a crossfire between 3-4 members of the other team. OUCH!

The first time I played Paintball we had a similar thing. You had 10 seconds to run as far and fast as you could within a roped-off area and then just turned on each other. I hid behind a tire barrier and that turned out to be a HUGE mistake as soon as I got outflanked. I got shot in the spine 3 times from about 5 feet away and couldn't lean back on a chair for the next few days without getting spasms.

I remember I charged the front gate of the enemy's castle this one time. Got shot a half dozen times, then hid by the gate to lick my wounds. Even though I was out, I guess most people thought I was still playing, as this idiot kicked open the gate and shot me up again. Close range combined with no gloves means I got this scar on my hand to commemorate my sacrifice.
