Okay, I think I have found the issue, for some reason my default unit is 40 for inf?

Go to graphics options and turn "Unit Size" up higher.

Low - 40
Medium - 80
Large - 120
Huge 160

that should not be the problem and if it is, it is still a bug.

Actually below a certain size, the formation doesn't function even if you start at a bigger size.

What Munky said. With such low unit sizes it only takes a handful of missing soldiers to kill the square function. But yes it's a bug if they can't do it with 40 men.

i know... but the size should diminish with the starting size. so if 40 is the standard than 10 should be the least number to form a square...

Yes it should be proportional to the unit size you select. Unless of course there is some technical issue.

Actually, it is proportional. Every time I've played, below a certain fraction, the company couldn't form squares.
