Thread: I need a new router

Default I need a new router

I have Sky broadband at home and have had my router for over two years, might even be 4. It seems to be on its last legs with the lights flashing when they should be on constantly, it also has very poor wifi and is steadily decreasing in performance and even drops my pc now and then and my pc is wired in.

Can anyone suggest a decent replacement? My current one is the freebie from Sky, Linksys I believe, and is changing the router as simple as unplugging one and plugging in the new one? I wouldn't want to spend too much, say up to £50.

    Thanks in advance all.

p.s. If Hus reads this then my router was the reason for him killing me so often in MW2 the other night

I also want a new router as mine causes 20% packet loss.

Doesn't sound like h/w issues. Try tweaking MTU, changing channel and/or upgrading router firmware.

For wireless always check by plugging in ethernet cable to see if the problem goes away, if it does, the issue is with the wireless. This could equally be down to the adaptor as well as the router.

I've been running a DLink-624 for years, after my cheapo Linksys died. Never had any problems with the DLink, easily configurable and I've got it locked down pretty tight. Check reviews of their newer stuff to see if the quality has kept up.

D-Link home networking products actually have quite a bad reputation. Linksys, Netgear and Belkin are usually better, though admittedly it differs somewhat per product.

    So, apparently not.

You have to be careful about your ISP's modems, as they sometimes require to meet specific requirements and just cannot be simply replaced.

For example, I am using Virgin Media, and I have a modem which the single goes through, before it hits my wireless router, so I can just swap and change my wireless router easy, as the ISP stuff goes through the one from the ISP. With BT, etc, they sometimes include that inside their own routers they provide, so you cannot just swap it out.

It really depends on your set-up.

Yohei, you were right. I upgraded the firmware, and everything appears to be working better than ever before!
