    Question Armenian Genocide

I am wondering why national governments don't recognize the genocide that took place.... as Genocide. I know that the Turks won't like this thread () but I believe it be a good chat.

We recognize the Rwanda Killings as genocide, correct? Holocaust? Hell yes. Even the genocide in Bosnia is recognized (to much disliking from the Serbs). But why not this? Is it because we can't hurt the feelings of our Islamic friends or what?

And yea, just as the mighty oak seems dead and barren of life in the deeps of winter, then sprouts tiny green buds as warmth arrives in the northern lands, presaging the coming of summer and the halcyon, wine-riddled days of leisure and pleasure, so does the Armenian Genocide poke its head up once per year to let the Orgahs know that time has passed and crops must be planted.

Not only that, but the Armenian Genocide season occurs at the same time in different parts of the world, even in different internet forums. Not only is there a single flock arriving to crap all over one's roof, there are multiple flocks, arriving one after another with the warming of the air, all clambering for an unmarked bit of roof where they can dump their dinner. Not only are these flocks not content to mix in with the local bird population and eat their fill before departing again, they have to make their mark by saying, "Look, I marked the roof on this spot and this spot and this spot during the last Armenian Genocide season".

I'm sincerely hoping he will do just that in TWC's history forum, where there was already another thread on the same subject on the first page. Especially since there had been an overwhelmingly popular motion that threads in the form of "Statement: discuss" were worthless and verboten.

Technically, the OP is not about whether there was an Armenian genocide, but why some governments don't officially acknowledge that whatever happened was a genocide. A few simple reasons: don't want to offend a NATO ally, and aren't sure it qualifies as a genocide. In a word, politics.

Once upon a time there was a heated discussion on the Armenian genocide, in which I participated. It finally begin to go off-topic, opf course but it was a good discussion. Dig it out from the year 2006 (Monastery), I think it was started about February or January. Much was discussed there and basically you can grasp two different point of views. It is a bit a larger discussion. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...the-Christians and https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?66637-Genocide-%28info%29 (the topic was exhausted all in all, so better keep it dead).

(From the distance of the time, I admit that the Ottomans should not be blamed for all the misfortunes on the Balkans, though. However, I still stand on my other points. Once again, I would like to underline that I have a good opinion for the Turkish people, though I am slightly sceptic about their politicians. )
    ---------------------

The issue is mainly a political one. Recognition of the Armenian genocide means a lot of complication in the relations with Turkey for this is extremely (painfully) touchy topic there. A good example how history can affect the present.
