I give that movie a 5.5/10, but I don't know if there is much competition for it, so it may very well be "the best" out there, lol.

Not a terribly bad film, by the standards of what's accepted today to be a proper Classical movie (Gladiator, 300, etc).
This should have been on a bigger scale though, it's more akin to a documentary.
Couldn't resist chuckling at Hannibal's joke as he addresses his men before Trebia: "The Romans think we are barbarians. Savages! [pause] Perhaps some of us are.... [chuckling from the men]"

300 was meant to be a comic book adaptation, I agree with that. Just as Hannibal: Rome's Worst Nightmare was a docudrama.
But I didn't say 300 was meant to be a proper Classical movie. I said it was what would be generally accepted (i.e. by the majority) to be a proper Classical movie. I really should have used the term "film set in the Classical period" to be more precise, actually.
I do believe plenty of peoples' expectations as to what a Classical period film are like are now coloured by action-rich, high-octane movies of the sort which run too loose with the facts - making "300" style movies what the vast majority accept to be a proper film set in the Classical period, nowadays at least.

300 is obviously comic book fantasy. I don't believe that people really think of it alongside Gladiator. I think they are more likely to group Gladiator with movies like Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven, or HBO's Rome. I don't think it's really a "sword and sandals" epic in most people's minds.
