Spain lose to Switzerland - and a goal scored by a fellow called Fernandes. Irony FTW.

Got to give Ronaldo credit though. He has made an industry of step-overs, getting near the box, falling down in dramatic fashion, and scoring on the resulting free-kicks. It pays well, you only have to turn in your dignity.

We have our first true upset of the tournament. Way to go Switzerland!

    The Swiss won!

On another subject, taking a quick look at goals scored during opening matches from 1990 to 2010.

    Italy 1990: 27 goals in 12 matches
    USA 1994: 30 goals in 12 matches
    France 1998: 37 goals in 16 matches
    Korea-Japan 2002: 46 in 16 matches
    Germany 2006: 39 in 16 matches
South Africa 2010: 25 goals in 16 matches

Am I the only one who finds it amusing that Italy '90, by many said to be among the most boring World Cups, had 2 more goals in 12 matches than the 25 scored in 16 matches in South Africa? It was the football style in Italy '90 that made FIFA introduce the 3 points for a victory rule to encourage more offensive gameplay.

Chile was entertaining. I kept hoping for that second goal, to move me ahead of that pesky IA, but in vain, although I can't fault Chile for not trying.

    Well done to Switserland!

From the looks of it, this tournament will be between Brazil and Germany then.

Well, sometimes the Italians manage to squeeze in. Which, the avid or even casual reader of .org footy threads will know, to me equals the Germans winning it a thousand times with Schumacher stopping the decisive penalty.

So, I had hoped for England to win it this time.

(Well technically I hope France wins it, but then I also hope to find Alizée and Kei$ha naked in my bed tonight.)

For the sake of amusement, I might be forgiven some politics in the Frontroom:

    06 June

PARIS — France sports minister Rama Yade questioned Sunday whether the national football squad needs such luxurious lodgings at the World Cup, suggesting instead a thriftier option should have been used during a time of economic crisis.

    16 June

The saga of the French football team's accommodation in South Africa rumbles on, with the revelation that junior sports minister Rama Yade, who criticised the squad's hotel for being too posh was, in fact, booked to stay in even plusher digs on a jaunt to the World Cup.

There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.
