Well, it made games more interesting.

debatable it made everyone the same.

I thought it was more interesting because no nation had a huge leg up on another, besides the one or two units that everyone had that were unique. Also because this made the huge center-of-the-map-with-everyone-involved battles much more exciting, because it made it so things can go either way.

but the differences would usually balance each othe rout and created less player decided struggles, (meaning sometimes the ai could wipe each other out without your help)

Talking of fierce opponents, Celts were one of the most difficult to wipe out in a certain game and they won my respect. Goths are too, though disavdantaged by the lack of walls, they fight like lions. My favourite system is 4 vs 4, hardest. In one of those battles, I clearly remember wiping out the Turks quickly (a kind of Blitzkrieg). They were very quick in advancing in the ages but very slow in updating their armies. The result was a carnage. I also clearly remember I preferred the Paladins as Blitzkrieg unit and only later I developed gunpowder and Cataphracts. So my cavalry supported by some monks sliced through the Turkish defenders and assaulted the castle with the King!. I have noticed they have not purchased the Murder Holes upgrade and I combined the trebuchets with a mass assault. The King was slaughtered and I withdrew.

I also clearly remember the song that I listened to the radio at that time during the assault of the Turkish catsle with the King: Arabian star by E-type. I really good Swedish music (I liked the 2007 album as well).

The problem was that my allies: the Japanese, the Vikings and especially the Persians had a difficult time to push back the hordes of the Celts, the Mongols and the Goths. The cavalry I sent stopped their advancement (at a heavy price!) and I was happy to see that the enemy stopped to send reinforcement. But for my horror, the enemy was heading for my walls. I remember I had to built several emergent castles to halt the enemy. I used Demo ships and suicide cavalry attacks to destroy the enemy artillery (the enemy outnumbered me badly) and I managed to stop the enemy. But it was a stalemate. It was one of the few times I have ever seen AI army to sit and wait close to my walls doing virtually nothing. So I made a Naval attack straight at the heart of the Celtic lands but I suffered a horrible defeat. I almost reached the King, almost. The second Naval attack was even more bloody and though all of the cavalry (about 40), monks (5-6)and heavy equipment (5-7, perhaps; all the numbers just demonstrate how big was the force even for 200 limit, though they are approximate strength; it was about 9 years ago!!! ) I sent died (except for 1 monk and 1-2 damaged trebuchets, as I vaguely remmber), the head of the Celtic King rolled on the ground. Everything else is history. Outnumbered by more than 2:1 the Mongols and the Goths faced their destiny. I managed to return the favor of the Mongols for slaughtering a group of gold miners. I was quite harsh, I remember that. But I was generous to the Gothic and Celtic population.

Yes, a separate thread would be nice!

P.S. Byz are made for the defense. Their castles and walls and buildings get more hit points, I clearly remember that.

Gran Turismo 4, Medal of Honor Allied Assault and that's about it.

I used to kick ass badly in MoH. Dunno how or why, since I sucked so much at CoD1. I remember a time when I sniped the whole opposing team by myself while they kept shooting at me (on the bridge map). And with the allied rifle I was litteraly unstoppable.

Ah, MOHAA. I ruled the sniper only servers.
