Maybe it's a woman thing, my sister learned on an automatic and still can't drive stick after all these years. Stick shifts rule, especially on mountain roads. If the wife can't drive stick, you don't have to worry about her taking your car.

I drove through Pittsburgh and back this weekend, I didn't see 40 car pileups or huge traffic jams, so I assume the driving experiment is going well.
