Thread: Why aren't leafblowers illegal?

    Default Why aren't leafblowers illegal?

    Give me one good reason.

If they are going to stay legal then shooting your neighbors with a paintball gun should become legal.

If it is an issue with noise, isn't there a limit before it comes breach of the peace? Google-fu turned up 115 decibels, it's probably not the same everywhere though.

Yes the noise...don't know what else it would be. And unlike lawnmowers it's just pure laziness. Raking works great.

He's still going an hour later btw...

I should move to California wear they've banned it in some cities.

In a study of students attending an elementary school near noisy train tracks in New York, for example, researchers showed that by the time the students reached sixth grade, those whose classrooms faced the train were a year behind those whose classrooms were on the quiet side of the building. After noise reduction materials were installed in the classrooms and around the tracks, reading scores in the two groups equalized, strengthening the case that noise was the culprit.
My theory is that people who use them don't mind the noise because there's nothing going on up there to be disrupted...

I'm guessing that somehow, somewhere in the USA constitution there will be an Amendment guaranteeing you The Right To Own and Operate Leafblowers. Or something of the sort...

I find I can't study or concentrate in silence, the silence is deafening somehow, it really distracts me. I have to keep the TV on to keep me focused. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person like this, I know most people are the opposite, but, well, everyone's different.

Some sounds are fine, others are unavoidably distracting.

I share your annoyance, but it is important to also note that most lawn service companies charge per yard which pegs their earning potential to time/yard. It simply isn't economically feasible to hire the amount of workers it would require to rake a yard in the same amount of time it takes one guy with a leaf blower. Outlawing such machinery may well put people out of work - people who cannot easily find alternative arrangements. Just playing devil's advocate here....

good, they can be unemployed for a while before they ROT IN HELL

yeah yeah...but I think they can just raise their rates per yard, citing the new law, and then slightly fewer people will hire them so a few outfits will go out of business. It will also hurt leafblower manufacturers. But will help rake manufacturers and neighborhood kids who want to make a few bucks. And the sanity of everyone else.

Edge trimmers are just as bad.

When leafblowers are outlawed, only outlaws will have leafblowers.

The Constitution, via its ammendments, guarantees U.S. citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Sasaki, I suspect that you will have little chance to avoid sonic weaponry. You can take comfort in the fact that your neighbor couldn't hear well for hours and shook like a palsied drunk all the way through dinner.

Everyone knows about the Amendments to the Constitution, but very few people know about the Addendum. To wit:

[A]nd therefore since dyvers citizens shalle maintayn frontage in proportion mete to the domicile, Congress shall make no law [...] that shall abridge the ownershippe, operation and fulsome enjoyment of steam-, horse- or slave-powered shrubbing equipage.

Note that the Founding Fathers did not specifically mention single-cylinder gas-powered lawn equipment, but -- BUT! -- their intent is quite clear. The right to keep and bear leaf blowers is foundational to our way of life.

I blame Obama. Before him leaves didn't fall off trees, THE NANNY STATE HAS LEAD TO LAZY LEAVES
There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

If those trees had health care they wouldn't loose their leaves. Now they at least have a chance.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

I heard that in the USSR and the eastern bloc, they had socialist Nazi consortiums of death to cull the leaves off the trees. That is why I am proud to be a republican patriot.

That's why you don't see eight-pointed leaves anymore.

That just means you're an auditive learner.

We all learn in different ways...... Something school politicians should figure out. Soon. Gah.

EDIT: Also Sasaki: I've never seen or heard a leaf-blower all my life. So, I have a feeling they're pretty rare around here.... You're more than welcome to move into my attic if you want to!!

Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban
