Cyprian? Have we another Greek come to charm us within the Hall?

Welcome! It is very quiet here for the moment, but the two of us can stoke the fire and keep up the fuel while we wait for old lang syne. With drone's good guidance of course!

Let me say that the first TW game I played was RTW, which I bought for my old computer having read a review of M2TW. I played that game and different mods for a year and a half before wondering where my favourite strategy game had come from.
I ventured into this Hall, asked the many savants their experience and agreed to sample also the vintage MTW, well prepared to withstand whatever cartoon graphics may be presented to me.

And even in my first campaign as Poland, when I heard the zither struck intermittently as I pawed over a charming map of Europe, admiring also the little pseudo-wooden pieces placed about the board, and the little various castles and keeps - I thought, yes, even does this old craftsmanship have a vest of aesthetic pleasure.

RTW and Europa Barbarorum slowly faded, and I was forced eventually to use an old laptop with on-board graphics, and now it is MTW that runs most fluently upon the outdated machine, and has long since become my favourite.

Currently, Cyprian, I have two mods installed, Pike & Musket and XL Tyberius 2.2.

Your reference to those two mods which have been neglected is noted, and I will turn to a story based within the work of Cegorach shortly.

For the present however, I have prepared a selection of samples from XL/Tyberius which you will find within their correct place in the Hall, and though I fear your taste has, in such a wide experience of flavour, become spoiled and prejudiced, it is my hope that you will nonetheless discover some comfort and civilisation in my Irish vintage.

    Thank you for your comments and support, Cyprian;

    Salut!

Thanks, Glenn and drone, for the hearty welcome. I can see that this forum not only has good taste, but fine manners as well. (Glenn, I am Greek only in name, but I may still be capable of pulling out some charm from time to time.)

Having ranged for several years over the vast M2TW and RTW mod-realms, I still find myself returning periodically to my first love from Activision (no, not Shogun—though I maybe shouldn't admit that here)—none other than MTW. So, drone, I'm truly chuffed to have found some other "die-hards!"

Glenn, I fully agree with your assessment of MTW's old-style "craftsmanship" and "vest of aesthetic pleasure" (nicely put, by the way). For me, the difference between MTW and subsequent titles can be likened to listening to Miles Davis's Kind of Blue on vinyl as opposed to mp3. MTW is, of course, the vinyl.

Also, I'll warrant that I have a wandering eye when it comes to mods, but I wouldn't say that my taste is spoiled! Truth be told, there are aspects of each and every mod we've been discussing that I feel are utterly brilliant; if only I had the time and skill to amalgamate all of these elements into a single, truly "super" mod, I could die a happy man. That said, I feel similarly to many others in regards to XL—that it's the game MTW should have been. Therefore, I welcome the opportunity to read AARs from my compatriots based on that fine mod.

And, Glenn, your Irish AAR did not disappoint! I'm not even sure how I missed it yesterday, but thank you kindly for directing me to it! (See my comments posted in the appropriate forum!)

Finally, I hope we can continue touching base on everything MTW related and beyond, but let's be honest: there's very little beyond MTW worth discussing, is there? (Kidding, of course.)

    à la prochaine!

    Well said brother Cyprian!

I chose to answer your posts from both threads here, and allow me to encourage you forthwith, that you should most certainly make a beginning of this AAR which imposes itself on your imagination.

For it is not important that it should be planned unto the finish, only that the tale is begun; and the taste of the AAR is most wonderful when it is brought forth without stress or pressure.
Think of the process of decanting a fine vintage, and this Cyprian is how the AAR must be handled.

As to my own, it is in the highest danger of being curtailed before it can mature - for already the whims of MTW have bruised it heavily. I never expected the Vikings to invade, and I must now defeat Scotland, rebel Wales, and return to Ireland all with limited funds and time, and all in the hope that not the Norse, Swedish, Novgorods, Danes, French nor English shall invade the new Irish claims.

But admittedly, in any case, these events must make for an exciting, if very short, first campaign.

There is always the next AAR!

    And to yours, Cyprian!

Well, Sir Glenn, as you've duly noted, the AAR is indeed a fickle beast--as is the very campaign whence it originates--but therein lies the charm of our tried and true game-engine: its very unpredictability. Thus, the upsets in your Irish campaign may be viewed as an opportunity to visit a shore rarely trodden by other AARs--namely, the place of defeat. Who says that a good story needs to have a happy ending? Certainly not I. And, as the first twenty turns of my own campaign seem to indicate, mine will not end happily with the king laying down his reverend and greying head after a long life of triumphs; rather, it will be a glorious Ragnarok where defeat is preordained, but the battle itself is the thing. (Darn, I'm afraid I just let slip a hint as to who my faction is...) Anyway, Glenn, thanks for the noble words of encouragement. I will try, when I have a bit of time, to put down on virtual paper these battles that have been roiling across my screen. In the meantime, I look forward to more posts from you and the others in this fine forum.

On a side-note: follow this link and you will (hopefully) find something you asked for earlier in the thread. http://www.atomicgamer.com/directory.php?id=1200

(Hint: it's the eighteenth from the top. I hope it works for you.)

    Cyprian!

    What a perfect Christmas present!

You could not have made a more generous gesture, this is very good of you, thank you very much.

I am most intrigued by your hints, and I will be waiting for the first installment. But whatever fortune you might face on the battlefield of MTW, remember that every tale is a victory for the Main Hall, no matter how it ends!

Thank you again for the present, and, when you have time, you will have an audience!

    Merry Christmas!
