Teacher Did Porn. So What?

Here's a story I don't understand at all. A science teacher did porn when she was a young woman. This has resulted in her losing her job twice. Does this make any sense on any level? I don't get it. Problems:

• School-age children should not be renting/buying commercial porn
• Why would a child illicitly viewing commercial porn be her problem?
• Why should a qualified science teacher be dismissed for appearing in adult entertainment that has no bearing on her students, her skill as a teacher or anything else?
• What the heck?

Can anyone explain to me why such a teacher should be dismissed or suspended?

Well, I guess you could say that parents expect certain moral standards from teachers given the influence they have on their children. Sure you can disagree with those values but the school should respect the parents' wishes.

Although, personally, I think they could be more forgiving towards her, it sounds like she was going through a rough patch in her life and she very much regrets it.

lol. I guess there is a tendency for some conservative people to be anti-sex, but not mind violence. I remember when I was about seven watching a film with my parnets when some gangsters/whatever had someones house under siege, and they stick a drill through a person's head, posted a severed dog's head through the cat flap and gunned some people down. But then there was a kissing scene and my mum changed it because it was unsuitable.

I'm fine with moral standards, but shouldn't that apply to things that are generally agreed-upon? Did she have sex with children? No. Did she steal or commit a crime? No. Was she hooking? No. Was she dishonest or otherwise deceptive? No.

Our society tolerates adult entertainment. In fact, porn consumption dollars are higher per capita in red/conservative states, so clearly there's a lot more than mere "toleration."

She broke no laws, and engaged in a widely supported and commercialized activity. Suspending or firing her is a freaking joke.

P.S.: As far as "respect the parents' wishes", don't we draw a line on that when the parents' wishes infringe on the basic liberty of the teacher? For instance, I know quite a few ideologues in real life. Point of fact, I know two liberal loons and something like six reactionary right-wingers, all of whom I consider friends. These are the sorts of people who do not acknowledge the humanity or decency of anyone who disagrees with their political views. I'm sure they would not want a conservative or a liberal teaching their child, depending on their bent. Should those "values" be respected by suspending teachers who hold divergent values? This gets into a basic case of whose values infringe on whose liberties.

The teacher broke no laws. This seems inarguable to me.

I think those parents are being unfair on her*, but its not about me, its their kids at the school.

Professional standards apply only to you once you've joined a particular profession. From what I understand of the case, she did porn before she ever began teaching so couldn't be held to those standards.

If ever there was a fault, it was committed by the screening of the employer...

As to her resignation, a clue might be found in the fact that the school was situated in an affluent suburb... I'm sure the issue would have been different had it been situated in a less wealthy community...

The problem for the teacher is probably the kids putting pictures of her nude across the school and doing insulting comments towards her.

Morality type clauses are pretty common for teachers. I'm guessing her past behavior violated the terms of her contract as written. These things happen...

Speaking as a concerned parent, had this happened with one of my daughter's teachers, I think the only recourse would be to schedule 2 to 3 parent-teacher conferences a month until we 'got to the bottom of it'. Unless of course she was ugly, in which case one visit would be sufficient to drop it and move on (I don't dare click the link on the story as I'm at work)...

All kidding aside, I would hope people have better things to worry about then stuff like this. As others have mentioned, forgiveness/"it's in the past" plays a big role here. In my world (Northeastern US, Roman Catholic, Irish & Italian descent), alcohol consumption isn't just tolerated, it's required. My in-laws blanched when I told them we were having an open bar at our wedding... Would they have the right have teachers fired that drank in school districts where it was perfectly legal?

It's legal to work in porn. She didn't break the law. She didn't do it while she was a teacher. I don't think she should have been fired. I understand that it violates the morals of some parents (who probably have giant porn collections of their own), but they should just deal with it. How closely should we scrutinize the past lives of teachers if it has no impact on their ability to do their job? She wasn't teaching the students how to go into the porn industry...

Not always true. Before I was allowed to take the bar, I had to undergo a full background check including fingerprinting. If I had been convicted of a crime in the past, it could have impacted my admission. In addition, the federal government commonly disqualifies people for various jobs based on activity they engaged in prior to applying. Many crimes bar you from federal service, including military service.

Well, now that you ask... There were a couple hot teachers back when I was in high school. I respected them a great deal. I also lusted after them a great deal. But I don't think seeing them in a porn movie would cause me to lose any respect for them.
