    Default There's something evil in my furnace

    I've been struggling to fix our hot water furnace for the last 3 days. The circulation pump for the 2nd floor quit on Wednesday evening after all the shops and parts supply places closed, naturally. The furnace was making all kinds of banging noises, and the 1st floor return pipe was so hot I shut the furnace off. It snowed that night too. Thursday morning I get a new pump and head to the basement to install it. I open the basement door and a bird went whizzing by my head from outta the basement. It must have gotten down the exhaust flue pipe for the furnace, gotten by the damper plate and escaped from an access cutout in the furnace housing. I caught and released the bird outside unharmed before the cat had him for breakfast. I replaced the pump and was back in business...so I thought. Over the last two days the furnace has been acting weird sporadically. Thumping noises, especially at night. Higher temperature readings in the house than what the thermostat is set for. I'm guessing that a control valve has gone bad, but am calling in a repairman to check it out.

    It's like there's a gremlin in my furnace messing with me.

    I've never seen anything like it. Ever have something weird like that happen to you?

    Thumping noises? Maybe you're getting some water hammer.

    In domestic plumbing this is experienced as a loud banging resembling a hammering noise.
    Did the new pump have the same head and everything? Anyways, the repairman should be able to fix it.

    I hope I don't get anything like that, because my approach is usually trial and error, heavy on the errors.

    I am reminded of the start of this:

    Hosa unmasked!

    I rented a place once that had a gas heated radiator system, I could never get that thing right. Either the pilot would go out, or it would run really hot. Drove me crazy.

    Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
    Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
    "Surely," said I, "surely that is something at my window lattice:
    Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore —
    Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; —
    'Tis the wind and nothing more."

    Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
    In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore;
    Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
    But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door —
    Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door —
    Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

    You were correct, CR. Except the water hammer effect was caused by cold 2nd floor return pipe water mixing with the hot supply coming from the furnace. I had the person who installed this system about 8 years ago check it out. He installed a bit of extra copper piping as a bypass, seemed to even out the temperature difference enough to eliminate the problem. We can't figure out why the pipe configuration worked for years with no problem till now.

    The gremlin has moved on to the thermostats now. The upstair's thermostat is suddenly so far out of calibration that even when the thermostat is shut off, it's still calling for heat upstairs (74 degrees worth). Now I need new thermostats.
