I've been struggling to fix our hot water furnace for the last 3 days. The circulation pump for the 2nd floor quit on Wednesday evening after all the shops and parts supply places closed, naturally. The furnace was making all kinds of banging noises, and the 1st floor return pipe was so hot I shut the furnace off. It snowed that night too. Thursday morning I get a new pump and head to the basement to install it. I open the basement door and a bird went whizzing by my head from outta the basement. It must have gotten down the exhaust flue pipe for the furnace, gotten by the damper plate and escaped from an access cutout in the furnace housing. I caught and released the bird outside unharmed before the cat had him for breakfast. I replaced the pump and was back in business...so I thought. Over the last two days the furnace has been acting weird sporadically. Thumping noises, especially at night. Higher temperature readings in the house than what the thermostat is set for. I'm guessing that a control valve has gone bad, but am calling in a repairman to check it out.
It's like there's a gremlin in my furnace messing with me.
I've never seen anything like it. Ever have something weird like that happen to you?
