Lightbulb Firefox 5 released: Same as it wever was

Is it just me, or is the latest major release of the Fox a yawner? It looks indistinguishable from version four. Is there something I'm missing, some major engine overhaul? What gives?

Firefox adopted Chrome's idea of major version numbers to make you feel happy rather than be meaningful. Similar to why the next Linux kernel will be 3.0.

Yeah, I can't help but think 4.1 would have been sufficient...

Which is yet another reminder of the end of the days by 2012. Firefox will catch up with the date with hotfixes, minor updates etc.

As far as I can tell the main thing it does is (maybe) break functionality with plugins I need for work. No need to find out...

A lot of plugin/addon developers are complaining about this. The quick increase to the major number is going to make compatibility checks a nightmare.

Lemur, you're really dating yourself with that video... :-)

Version six came out this month, what a mess! These version updates really are killing me for patch management on the networks that I maintain. I hope they simmer down now and stick to patching current versions for awhile. If they keep this up I'm going to start calling them Adobe.

    What are you talking about?

I am thinking of switching browser because of this, seriously.

Okay, now we're on 6.02, and I'm getting slightly cheesed off. The reason? My Photobucket uploader. I guess unless Photobucket does some grerrymandering, it won't be compatible with the breakneck release speed. I think it was fully compatible with all the versions of Firefox 5, which was quite similar to 6, so what's the big whup? Does the dev really need to call different hooks, or do they just need to nudge the compatibility text from 5 to 6? In other words, is this a technical necessity (that I live without auto-uploading of photos) or is it bureaucratic horse-hockey?

It may even be as crude as editing the extension to support higher release versions. Like there's a line in the code for the extension (it's confusingly called a chrome I think) that says "what version is this compatible with" and the extension will fail if the Firefox version is higher.

That's not necessarily the only problem, but it might be worth a look if you really, really need an extension.

Just switched to chrome. I like getting rid of the bloat.

Though Chrome needs more addon support.

Edit: It has actually greatly expanded since I last used it, even has ad-block plus. I am going to try it out.

I'm beginning to think that I should throw in with our Google overlords and switch to Chrome. Firefox is just being a little too odd for me.

Try opera, if for no other reason than to stick it to our Google overlords.

Lemur, Chrome is working far better for me.

I used to use Firefox with a theme mod to make it very minimalistic, and the only other addons was the "Sync" function (handy as I use up to 3 computers regularly) and Adblock plus.

I switched to Chrome, it loads far faster, quicker and better, less bloated, it has adblock plus and it's "Sync" function is superior to Firefox's and less buggy. In all, it was a great switch and I moved to Chrome on those systems I used and I recommend you do the same.

(Lack of Adblock plus, etc, was the reason I switched back to Firefox when I was on Chrome years ago)

I use the Imageshack toolbar and that is still only compatible to Firefox 3 Engines and it is incompatible with Firefox 6.0.2. It is really frustraing that I can't use that right now.

There has been talk of an extended support release for a while now, not sure how far along they are with it: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Enterprise/...pport:Proposal

I do wonder what the Mozilla devs are smoking, but personally I have a love/hate relationship with firefox, but have stuck with it because other browsers lack many features/add ons.
