Whenever I experience hangups (like today) the message I read has something to do with contacting atomicgamer.com. What is this and do we need it?

GH is correct, the Org is hosted on Atomic Gamer's web servers. Thus, we get free hosting in exchange for the few banners you see on various parts of the Org (if you don't run AdBlock). If you're an old FPSer like me, you'll know Atomic Gamer better by their original name: Telefragged. They were one of the top Quake I/II sites back in the day, and eventually branched out into a general gaming news site. Many gaming sites are hosted on AG, but the ones you're most likely to have heard of are CivFanatics and No Mutants Allowed.
