Both "The Thing" films are based on the novella Who Goes There? The 1950s version of The Thing is radically simplified, since they did not have the technology to show a shape-absorbing alien at a reasonable cost. John Carpenter's film was able to stick much more closely to the original novella, and benefits from it.
