    Default Hosed, Me Thinks

First off, this is my first post here, so a hello to all!

As is so usual with new posters, I have a problem. Another poster at totalwar.com thought it was best addressed here. I believe it is terminal, but---

I've been playing MTW Gold for a few months; mostly within VI but recently with the game proper. Made it through one campaign, lost my second, then into my third. Very close to a win, after a battle, it is reported to my monarch that the Germans feel they cannot win at Vienna so are retreating. Then I click on the checkmark. The game crashes (6 tries). So, I completely unloaded the game then attempted a reload. First disc, fine. Second disc, fine for about 3/4s then an error message stating something about some sort of music file failing the redundancy test and no more reload. same thing with two more tries. I bought the game new a few years ago but just a few months ago, loaded it for the first time so it hasn't had a lot of use and no abuse. However, I think the disc is shot. Any thoughts/suggestions? I'm really not into buying the game again unless the cost is nominal as a matter of principal as the disc should not have had problems (if that is indeed the problem :) ).

Don't think its an issue since my computer hasn't changed but my OS is Win7.

I'm not using any mods and have v2.0

    Welcome to the Org, LordK9!

Sounds to me like your disc is bad. Seems a bit too soon to have that happen, but sometimes things happen. Have you tried cleaning it?

I don't think your game crashing scenario is related, that was probably just some freak bug. You might have been able to get around it by reloading your game from the previous year and replaying the turn a little differently.

One of the joys of MTW is that the game is so old, you don't really need to run through the install process once you have a working unpacked install on your drive. I keep an original (patched to 2.01) directory copy that I don't play with, and make copies of that for playing the vanilla game and messing about with mods. I also have this directory on a flash drive just in case my original install disks fail. As long as the play disk passes the DRM check, I'm good to go.

It might be worth trying again, and this time copy down word for word what the error message was. Then try googling the message, and also try searching it here and at totalwar.com. If you are lucky, someone has already posted about how to fix the exact problem you are having.
In those simple times there was a great wonder and mystery in life. Man walked in fear and solemnity, with Heaven very close above his head, and Hell below his very feet. God's visible hand was everywhere, in the rainbow and the comet, in the thunder and the wind. The Devil too raged openly upon the earth; he skulked behind the hedge-rows in the gloaming; he laughed loudly in the night-time; he clawed the dying sinner, pounced on the unbaptized babe, and twisted the limbs of the epileptic. A foul fiend slunk ever by a man's side and whispered villainies in his ear, while above him there hovered an angel of grace . . .

Thanks to both. I did try cleaning the disc. Great ideas - wish I had thought of some of them before (and I know better and should have! ). I'll try another reload shortly followed by the searches. Update will be coming.

If you still have problems, try posting the exact error message here. I reckon people who are computer savvy can't do much with questions which say "something about some sort of" just like a doctor can't help you much if you say, "I have a sharp pain in my head, or maybe its a dull pain in my stomach. I'm not sure."

Well now, how things change. I tried loading yet again to get the exact message and, lo and behold, it loaded without a hitch -- AND -- the save games that I thought I erased survived. The problem with Venice was still there but there was an autosave just one minute prior and using that one, the Venice problem went away. The bottom line is that I am back to where I was and gaming away!

Thanks for the help. I would never had gotten this fixed without the idea piggybacking. CHARGE!

A textbook exploitation of Sod's Law. You go in looking for an error message and instead the game works.
Currently day dreaming about having the funding and man power to port MTW to mobiles. Whole and unaltered.
Having a nightmare getting it to run on more than 2GB of RAM
