Default Sins of a Solar Empire: the redux thread

So, Ive been getting back into the 4x space genre. I dont have a lot of time to play video games anymore, but when I do my time is split between BF3 (when I want something faster paced) and SoaSE (when I want something more laid back).

Its been so long since Ive played that I forgot how much fun I have with this game. Im using the Distant Stars mod for Diplomacy, and its making for one hell of a game. Three teams of two on a large map. Had two huge fleets. One was pretty much massacred by a combined enemy fleet that was triple my own,and my second fleet couldnt reach the first one in time to save it. Plus they were cleaning up the remnants of another enemy fleet near my home system. Then this massive enemy fleet jumps into my system, and my fleet fights a losing battle until my ally comes to the rescue.

So now Im trying to rebuild my fleets so I can take the fight to the enemy. Tense game.

Anybody else still play? Also, anybody own SoaSE: Rebellion? If I had the money for it I would get it since its seems much more expansive than the original title.

I have rebellion and I can say those titans are brilliant, the loyalist TEC titan in particular is like a fully upgraded moving starbase: it can singlehandedly slaughter fleets of 3 flagships or less and is an absolute beast in defence when combined with the double starbase ability. It's also really fun watching the shrikens zip around a battle instead of sitting in the same place during battles, if only I had the patience to play it more often.

Yeah, the new ship types + more races (even if they are only slight variations between rebel and loyalist) seem to be one of the biggest perks to the game. Maybe if it goes on sale for $20 Ill get it.

Though the Distant Stars mod already makes it so all ships move around in battle so no more static battles.

Do they zip around at 400 miles and hour running in and out of weapons range?

The frigates are quite fast, and expectantly, the cruisers and capital ships go much slower. They essential are using the fighter craft behavior and applying it to the other ships.

Though Im not 100% sure if capital ships have this behavior in this mod, or if their movement is independent of the mod.

I played a lot of Rebellion this summer (LAN play with friends), and still play it on and off occasionally. It's good when your time is limited, the replayability is nice, and the rebels add some variety. Surprised Steam is still asking $40 for it, maybe during the winter sale you can get a deal.
