Proof Lemur Has No Principles: Voting Republican Today

Well, here I go, violating a pledge I made to myself not to vote Republican until the national party pulled its head out of its buttocks.

My excuses rationalizations reasons: Local election, and I know the candidate personally. Have had generally positive dealings with him. I know he's a good guy, and I am friends with his wife. I know he has two small kids, which matters to some local issues, and I know his wife is a public school teacher, so some of the more virulent anti-school, anti-teacher stuff isn't going to sit well with him.

I also know he's fairly educated and sane, unlikely to indulge in the theoconservative hogwash about evolution being a lie from the pits of hell, and the sun revolving around the Earth. So ... I may have utter disdain for the national party, but people are more important than the organizations they nominally adhere to.

Plus, I'm under no personal obligation to vote Democrat. There are plenty of things I object to in the D party; I just don't find them as inflexible, idealistic, and ideological as the current Republican Party. So I never made a personal vow to avoid them as a whole.

So ... yeah. Gonna vote R, for the first time in about twelve years. Euro-Orgahs, go ahead and look askance, mutter behind your croissants, and titter at the dumb American as you gnaw your sauerkraut. I accept your derision. I INVITE IT.

I may be seeing something like this personally soon enough. There's a provincial election coming up. And for the first time in my life, since I've been able to understand such things, my mom is going to vote for someone other than the local branch of Canada's social democrat party (NDP).

Fair enough. I believe I have voted for every party for one reason or another. The consequences here are easier to confront; party discipline makes the individual candidate less interesting but it can still be an influence.

Actually, the wife was my son's first-grade teacher, so almost all of my interactions with her have been about the kids. That makes the idea of macking on her ... kinda creepy.

It's weird, as much as I personally like this guy, I feel a real undertow of guilt voting R today. It's as though I were rewarding one of my kids for a temper tantrum. Go away, guilt! I have no use for you!

voting for a party on the local stage is hardly the same thing as voting for a party on the national stage.

That's what I'm telling myself, to smother my guilt. Also, the local elections are officially non-partisan, so my friend is not running AS a Republican, he just happens to BE a Republican. And with that fine distinction, I shall be content.

There are some people associated with that party who are okay, good people even.
But stereotypes are funny.

I don't see the issue if his ideas are good and his politics are fine.
Further I would like to note that I do not eat Sauerkraut and don't feel guilty about it.

If you are voting someone who will represent what you want then it won't matter which party he or she belongs to.

People always complain about politicians and parties but quite often have different feelings about their local rep. We do tend to side with our locals as exceptions to the rules. It's always the outsiders that are the bad ones... Very human... Also most of our political beliefs are prejudiced based on media tidbits and scandalous behaviour which tends to be the outliers not the norm. I'm sure the cranks get more air time then the party moderates.

On the voting thing - you voted smart, everyone is is voting stupid. If everyone voted the way you did, you wouldn't need to worry about guilt.
