Default ==The Lost Art of Keeping A Secret, REDUX==

Welcome to the revamped edition of the COMPLETELY UNOFFICIAL, NOT-EXACTLY-AUTHORIZED preview thread for Europa Barbarorum... a (not-so) little thing we like to call...

The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret

    • The Idea:

Spend all weekend refreshing the forums waiting for your weekly EB news fix? Is your room wallpapered with screenshots? Can't sleep at night because of your anticipation? This is the thread for you! TLAOKAS, of course, was not my idea, but was the brainchild of the extremely hard-working [B]Sarcasm[/B}, who has now moved on to greener pastures within the EB team itself! Lucky bastard! Anyway, obviously he would no longer be able to keep this thread up-to-date with all the work he is now doing, not to mention the whole conflict-of-interest thing, so I (Sheep) have taken over. Hopefully I will be able to continue on with his tradition.

From its start, Europa Barbarorum has been shrowded in mystery, and as Khelvan, Aymar, Urnamma and the rest of the gang run a tight ship, very little information comes out, except that which is released in weekly news bulletins. These are spread across the board and tend to be flooded with a whole lot of exclamation points and worship posts, not to mention useless and spontaneous conversations started by the likes of Sarcasm (and others, such as the current author). Also, there is a lot of speculation and discussion on this forum regarding units, factions, translations, graphical aspects, historical accuracy AND nudity, believe it or not.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a single forum where it's all organized and with as much information as can be found on the stuff exposed on the news bulletins and other threads? Hell, it might even become a 'cult' thread... but most likely it won't. So, with Khelvan's reluctant approval here we are.

Just to be ABSOLUTELY CLEAR, none of the information in this thread can be taken as gospel. Sheep has no relation to the EB team (except as a fan) and has no insider information... all of the stuff you see in here can be found throughout this board, if you take the time to look. But the whole idea is that you don't have to! Sweet deal, for you. But just keep in mind that the EB team reserves the right to change any and all aspects of the game hinted at in this thread. Again... COMPLETELY UNOFFICIAL!!! NOT EXACTLY AUTHORIZED!!!

    • The Map:

This absolutely huge and gorgeous map was released by the EB team in July. The first thumbnail above leads to a picture of the map without faction starting locations (some of which are still secret!). The second is a fancy antique-ish map created by Teleklos Archelau. Complete with ferocious sea monsters!

A somewhat similar map has been released as a separate download called Mundus Magnus by Dead Moroz, former mapmaker for EB. This download is available at the TW Center website (where he is known as ngr).

Here is a compilation of all the faction maps so far released by the EB team:

It is definitely meant as a work-in-progress, to be updated as more complete information is released! Many thanks go out to Lord Tomyris who made the original faction map complilation featured in this thread. I decided to use the official one just because it's... well, official. But we all know who thought of it first, right? ;)

    • The Factions:

To the day in which this is being written, the playable factions are:

    Rome:

The Romans should feature at least two periods for their legions.
The first period ("pre-Marian") of Rome will field large contingents of Latin heavy infantry (principes/triarii) as their main force and reserve, skirmishers (velites) and light infantry (hastati) in the front and low-quality heavy cavalry (equites) on the flanks. There should also be large amounts of allied Italian contingents, even up to a 1:1 ratio, but with a larger proportion of (better-quality) cavalry.
The second period ("Marian") should be a time where the Legions are standardized, and all Latin and Italian contingents are armed in the same fashion, as heavy infantry armed with pila. Non-Roman peoples should provide auxilia in the form of armoured spearmen, skirmishers, and specialized cavalry.

    Aedui:

The Gauls will be represented by the confederation led by one of the several major tribes, the Aedui.
Will also be referred to as Gaul for the remainder of this thread.

The Gauls field a very balanced unit roster, with good quality light, medium and heavy infantry, all fully able to stand in a battleline, some even phalanx capable. Their light and medium cavalry is also of good quality, and so is their heavy cavalry, though very expensive. They have access to a great variety of regional units as well, which give them other useful options. A good all-around army.

    Arche Seleukeia:

Will also be referred to as Seleucid Empire for the remainder of this thread.

As one of the primary Successor states, the Seleucids feature a typical Successor army dominated by phalangites of various qualities and origins, supported by heavy cavalry (including kataphraktoi and hetairoi) and units with ability to skirmish (from light and mobile peltastai up to the heavily-armoured elite thorakitai argyraspidai). However, the empire is very large so Seleucid armies have been influenced by many outside forces such as the steppe peoples and the Celtic Galatians, and also show an eastern influence, with their unit rosters including units like war elephants and cataphracts, ideas borrowed from the Persians and Indians that Alexander fought.

    Armenia:

The Armenians will likely field an army made up of light/medium infantry with a few heavy infantry (particularly axemen). In support it will field large quantities of both light and heavy cavalry in the form of horse archers (probably from the steppe tribes) and cataphracts (of lighter build than those of Parthia).

    Baktria:

    Replaces Numidia.

The armies of Baktria are a mix between Hellenic and Iranian fighting forces. Their bread-and-butter, like most of the Successor states, will be the phalanx, although Baktria's location far to the east of Greece will mean many of its phalangites are natives where the other Successor kingdoms would use more loyal Greek colonists. There will be several types of elite infantry units, including spear-armed hoplites (hyspaspistai) and heavy shock infantry (pheraspidai) armed with swords. There will also be many native units, including the versatile doryphoroi armed with bows and spears. Still other units will show a true blending of cultures, such as the Indo-Greek hoplites. Cavalry will range from very light missle cavalry (including horse archers) to extremely heavy cataphracts, with a multitude of region-specific cavalry in between. Some Indian units will also be present and Baktria should be able to send Indian elephants into battle.

    Casse:

The Britons will be represented by a historically powerful tribe, the Casse.
Will also be referred to as Britannia for the remainder of this thread.

Britannia will field an army composed of very mobile infantry and chariots. Its infantry is mostly light and medium and many possess the ability to skirmish and hide in long grass in order to spring ambushes. Also swords are rare due to relative shortages of iron in the isle. It has a couple of heavy infantry units which are very expensive to recruit but of very good quality. It will have very little cavalry (one unit of pony cavalry), and relies on chariots as a mounted arm instead. Slingers provide the only missile support for this faction.

    Dacia:

The Dacians will presumably field mostly infantry, with some archer support. They will most likely have a mix of light and medium infantry including the terrible falxmen. They will likely have some medium cavalry as well.

    Iberia:

Representing a number of local Iberian tribes.

Little or nothing has been released on the Iberian/Celtiberian armies. But it will most likely contain some light and medium infantry, with ability to make both ambushes and open battles. Most infantry will carry a slashing falcata or a straighter thrusting sword of great quality, since they were great smiths and metal was plentiful. Almost all will carry a javelin of some sort, the soliferrum being especially deadly. The cavalry is some of the best in the western world, and medium and heavy (reportedly, there is a sort of western cataphract) variants should be in the roster. For missile support they use slingers, including those of the Baleares Islands.

    Karthadastim:

Will also be referred to as Carthage for the remainder of this thread.

The Empire of Carthage will field armies made up almost exclusively of foreign units. The few units actually made up of Carthaginians will either be miltia or super-elite Sacred Band units. The rest of its soldiers are mercenaries or conscripted from areas under Carthage's rule, such as Libya, the Balearic Islands, and parts of Numidia and Iberia. This variation is reflected in the diversity of the Carthaginian military, featuring a mix of spear-armed and phalanx units from Africa (including Libyan and Liby-Phoenician infantry, as well as Sacred Band infantry) and guerilla-style troops from Spain (caetratii and scutarii). The infantry is supported by missile units such as the elite Balearic slingers and a whole range of cavalry, from superb Numidian mounted skirmishers, to light and heavy Iberian horsemen, all the way up to the ironclad Sacred Band cavalry. Later in the game, Carthage's armies (assuming they are still around) will react to incursions of Roman heavy infantry by adopting heavier mail armour and altering their tactics to emphasize close combat with heavy infantry units.

    Koinon Hellenon:

Representing the Greek city-states (poleis) of Sparta, Athens, and Rhodes.
Will also be referred to as Allied Hellenes for the remainder of this thread.

The Allied Hellenes will have an army based mainly around hoplitai of different sorts (including elite Spartans), supported by few other heavy or light infantry. It will rely on screening units to guard the flanks of its phalanx, mainly skirmishers. It will rely very little on heavy cavalry (which will be most likely very expensive to train and maintain), or archers (small range, inadequate damage). The nearby presence of the right kind of mercenaries (especially Cretan archers and Rhodian slingers) will most likely make up for these deficiencies.

    Makedon:

Representing the Antigonid Dynasty in Macedon.
Will also be referred to as Macedon for the remainder of this thread.

The Macedonic army will base itself around the use of a fixing phalanx, with some heavy/light infantry and skirmishers covering the gaps between the blocks and heavy cavalry in the form of subject Thessalian Cavalry and hetairoi. The main line can be reinforced by elite units (hypaspistai and pheraspidai) and supported by both slingers and archers.

    Pahlava:

Will also be referred to as Parthia for the remainder of this thread.

Parthian armies, despite being renowned for their cavalry, were actually composed mainly of infantry. That infantry mostly consisted of skirmishers and other light troops, perhaps not as heavily armed and well-trained as their Mediterranean rivals, but good enough to still be effective at sieges. Their infantry will be supported by many kinds of cavalry, including horse archers and the legendary cataphracts. Elephants are also a possibility.

    Pontos:

Almost no mention has been made of Pontic armies in the EB forums (suspicious?). Presumably, it will be a mixture of phalangitai along with some light (native infantry) and heavy infantry (pheraspidai) covering the gaps between blocks. Galatian infantry is also a possibility. The natives should provide the light cavalry (javelin-throwing cavalry) and skirmishers. Horse archers could be provided by steppe tribes. The heavier cavalry should be of Hellenistic origin and in the hetairoi fashion. Other medium and heavy cavalry should be provided by the Hellenic population and the Cappadocians as well. Scythed chariots are also featured.

    Ptolemaioi:

Egyptian faction, Hellenic instead of Pharaonic as in vanilla game.
Will also be referred to as Ptolemaic Egypt for the remainder of this thread.

The Ptolemaic army, like most of those of the Diadochy, is made up of a core of Hellenic soldiers supported by native non-Greeks. The Greco-Macedons provide the main phalanx (pezhetairoi), the elite infantry guards (agemata) and the heavy cavalry (kleruchoi and hetairoi). The natives provide skirmishers (psiloi), light infantry (pantopadoi, machimoi), and light cavalry (machimoi). Although most of their troops will fight in phalanx, the Ptolemies should also feature one or more kinds of non-phalanx infantry of various strengths, including heavy Ethiopian mercenaries. Elephants should also be present.

    Sauromatae:

Representing a number of nomadic steppe tribes.
Will also be referred to as Sarmatians for the remainder of this thread.

The Sarmatian tribes are famous for their horse archers as well as many other types of cavalry from light skirmishers all the way up to heavily-armoured nobles. They will also be able to field numerous infantry from the more settled tribes, although numbers will vary from battle to battle.

    Swêbōz:

The Germans will be represented by the confederation led by one of several major tribes, the Suebi.
Will also be referred to as Germania for the rest of this thread.

The Germans will, like the Britons, have a shortage of iron, so they will field limited amounts of armoured troops and swords (which will be reserved for the wealthier elite soldiers who can afford to make or import the equipment). Most of their light and medium infantry will be unarmoured and armed with framae, thrusting spears and javelins. The infantry will be supported by missile troops, including short-range skirmishers and long-range archers, as well as by several different types of cavalry ranging from light to heavy.

    Thracia:

Thracia should be able to field some Hellenic-style soldiers such as hoplites, phalangites and heavy cavalry armoured in bronze (for the nobles) along with their more traditional medium infantry armed with javelins and rhomphaias, peltastai skirmishers, light cavalry and javelinmen on horse. Bastarnae mercenaries should also be present.

    Numidia:

Not currently a playable faction, the Numidians will be just another one of the Eleutheroi, rebel factions waiting for CA's decision to make the game more mod-friendly, and allow EB to add more factions.

I speculate that there are other factions being considered to be made rebels, such as Thracia... Armenia was considered as well, but the supporters of its replacement were promptly lynched by an angry mob with pitchforks and torches, and now, all is as it should be.

    A Note About Faction Icons:

Part of the mod's objective is to remake the faction icons, as seen above. All of the icons shown so far have been created by Parmenio and Dux Corvanus, except for that of Iberia, which was created by Aymar.

    Barbarian Tribes:

In vanilla Rome: Total War, the barbarians are represented as ahistorical "nations" with a unified government. But historically, these people organized themselves in a multitude of tribes, loosely affiliated at best. Unfortunately, hard-coded limits built into the game cap the number of factions (including slaves and rebels). This limits the manner in which Europa Barbarorum can represent the barbarians in a historical manner.

As a compromise, barbarian factions will be set more around specific tribes than those supposed "nations" featured in the vanilla game. Dacia will represent the Getae, Gaul will be Aedui, Thracia will be the specific tribe of the Odrysians, the Iberians will be represented by the Celtiberic tribes (including the Lusitanii), Britannia will be the Casii Kingdom and finally Germania is based loosely on the Suebii Confederation.

    Greek City-States:

Allied Hellenes is barely historical, representing a brief alliance between the city-states of Athens, Sparta, and Rhodes. This is a difficult choice, because there was no coherent faction that controlled southern Greece throughout this time period, as the Antigonid dynasty controlled northern Greece and Macedon... the same problem EB had with representing the many different barbarian tribes. There are just not enough factions available to represent the reality of the independent city-states or even the various leagues and alliances they made during this time period.

    Roman Factions:

It has recently been confirmed that EB will feature a unified Roman Republic with no Senate. This would hopefully allow up to three places to be reassigned to new factions. Think of the possibilities! The return of Numidia! Illyrians no longer an April Fools joke! Rome sits back and watches as the Arverni go head-to-head with the Aedui! The Mauryans cross the Hindu Kush!

    • The Armies:

    Recruitment:

EB will have a complicated recruiting system, reflecting the complicated reality of the 3rd century BC. There will be faction-specific units, some of which will be buildable anywhere, but some will only be buildable in certain provinces or regions. There will be province-specific units, some of which will be buildable only by certain factions, and others buildable by any faction that owns the province. On top of that, there are mercenaries and auxiliaries that are not buildable, only hireable. And of course some units may fit into more than one category.

    Unit List:

Unit screenshots will comprise the majority of this thread as that seems to be what people are most interested in.

This list will try to collect all information regarding the units that will fill your screen, including screenshots. I will also attempt to make out its function on the battlefield and translate their names, when applicable. Take every unit description with a pinch of salt. Wait... you better take some more...

This new recruitment system is awesome, but it makes it hard to categorize the units here as they do not correspond to discrete factions. After a little bit of discussion, we decided on a categorization roughly based on the "culture" of the units instead of their faction. Now, we are using an extremely broad definition and of course we couldn't represent every culture. So, for instance, "African" units will include only native Carthaginian and native Egyptian units, as well as other independent units from Africa. Many of Ptolemaic Egypt's units are based on the Greek phalanx and comprised of Greek soldiers, so those particular units would go under the "Hellenic" category. Likewise Carthage used many Iberian and Celtic units and those would not be included in the "African" section.

It should be noted that the "cultures" as used in this thread do not reflect the cultures of the factions as expressed in game mechanics, nor does the EB team ever use our "culture" categories anywhere in the mod.

Many of these unit screenshots and descriptions were collected in the beginning of the development of the mod, when it was more open to the common user and much has surely changed after that. So, not all of these units have actually been 100% confirmed to exist in the game as described here in this thread. The ones marked with "UNCONFIRMED" are units that have only been mentioned in an unofficial capacity, or are assumed by this thread to be present. Others are marked as "OUTDATED", which means the skins/models pictured are older and have probably been replaced by now, or were indicated as a work-in-progress when originally posted. The names of many units written here in English will probably be translated to their native tongue when EB is released.

ANY AND ALL UNITS PICTURED HERE ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE BY THE EB TEAM.

Description : A large merchant galley, used only as a transport auxiliary.
Buildable by : Rome:, Dacia, Thracia, Parthia, Sarmatia

    *Liburnes

    Translation : ???
Description : Technically a late design, used mostly after the fact of Octavian’s victories made the Mediterranean an imperial roman pond. An aphract, two-banked galley, they generally seem to have carried a ram, but otherwise raged from 16 – 50 oars.
    Buildable by : Rome

    *Corvus Quinquireme

    Translation : Crow "Five-Oared"

Buildable by : Carthage, Allied Hellenes, Macedon, Seleucid Empire, Ptolemaic Egypt

    *Pentere

    Translation : "Five-oared"
Description : A powerful and flexible galley, depending on how the ship is designed (with one two or three oar banks) these ships are capable of both the maneuver and ramming tactics of the earlier age of the trieres, or the artillery and boarding tactics of the large polyereis.
Buildable by : Carthage, Allied Hellenes, Macedon, Seleucid Empire, Ptolemaic Egypt

    *Pentekonteros

    Translation : "50-oared"
Description : Older warship than the trireme with a single row of 25 oars on each side. The trireme's staggered seating permitted three row of oarsmen, and an outrigger above the gunwale, projecting laterally beyond it, kept the third row of oars out of the way of the first two.
Buildable by : Allied Hellenes, Macedon, Seleucid Empire, Ptolemaic Egypt, Pontus, Armenia, Dacia, Thracia, Parthia, Baktria

    *Trimehiola

    Translation : ???
Description : The triemiolia was invented by the Rhodians to help with their anti-piracy policy: An aphract trieres, with (based on the name parallel) the same kind of rig as a hemiolia. With three oar banks and sails (and possible a lighter build than a normal trieres the triemiolia presumably, could catch a fast pirate with its own game, and with a larger crew and professional marines, could overwhelm the pirate or simply ram it. In terms of translation the Triemiolia is not three-and-a-half, but instead simpler version of the compound word made by combining trieres and hemiolia.
Buildable by : Allied Hellenes, Macedon, Seleucid Empire, Ptolemaic Egypt, Pontus, Armenia

    *Pirate Ship

    Translation : N/A
Description : Hemiolia, A fast dikrotos (two-banked) galley and famous as the quintessential pirate ship. The name and its reputed use by pirates have been taken to suggest the ship typically used both oars and sail, thus allowing in to catch a fleeing merchant and outlast a warship that had been cleared for action (i.e. without its sails and rigging) in a chase. The One-and-a-half presumably means just before closing on a prize the aft section of the top rowers could quickly pull in their oars, lower what would probably a light mast and sail and then be ready to serve as boarders.
    Buildable by : Rebels

    • Unique Buildings:

Europa Barbarorum promises to not only be filled with historically accurate military units and geography, but also some of the most famous and important structures from around the ancient world. The wonders as found in vanilla Rome: Total War have been deleted and will be replaced by buildings found within the cities instead.

Although there are hard-coded limits on the number of buildings they can add, many cities should have the structures that made them famous. These buildings will vary in terms of the bonuses they offer (usually just to the province they are found in) and other factors.

Here are several of the ones we have gotten sneak peeks at over the last few months, with probable locations listed by city, province, and region:

    2 Things:

I had thought of making a "Features" section in the thread so I could put something like the March 18 News Bulletin into TLAOKAS (nice abreviation btw).

What do you think of the idea?

And what about calling it REDUX instead of Revamped? It´s cooler IMO lol

BTW: You still have a lot of units to insert here! Get to work!

Joking! That coordinator job is stating to get to me....

I thought about putting in a news/feature section but I figured that would be pretty redundant what with EB doing its own weekly news releases. I plan to just insert the info in that post and others into the appropriate section of this thread and/or make new sections as necessary (like I will need to make a new buildings section).

And the banner is gone, weird. I upgraded to Firefox 1.0.2, maybe that did it.

(edit) Never mind, it's back. It's the same banner as the one at the top of the .Org homepage, grrr. Right over my triarii now.

You still have it saying that the Aorsi, Dahae, and Scythians have swords. They have spears and bows, not swords and bows.

hey sheep, you may want to change the wording of this sentence:

it could be read as implying that a falcata was a great quality straight thrusting sword.

edit: oh and btw, the banner problem you are having is a mozilla glitch (it has to do with the # of links in the page, afaict). here's a watchtower thread about the same phenomenon:
    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=45362

somewhere in the babe thread there's another discussion of the problem. i just resize my browser window a couple of times and that moves the banner to it's rightful place at the bottom of the page.

I haven't got through the Hellenic units yet, so I haven't proofread the Iberian, Italian, or Near Eastern sections yet. Sorry it is slow going but I work 65 hours a week or so these days so my time is limited. But I am making a little progress each day. Some things I can do at work but other things I have to be at home with access to Paint Shop Pro. So, sorry, but please, feel free to point any glaring errors so I can correct them when I get time!

PS - Thanks Big John, if I hit refresh it goes away, banished to the bottom of the page where oh so many people will be looking at it.

Thanks! But the small s**t is important too so I don't want to seem discouraging to anyone pointing out errors. I just might not get to it right away so... patience! It's a virtue! Heh.

This absolutely huge and gorgeous map has been released as a separate download called Mundus Magnus by Dead Moroz, head mapmaker for Europa Barbarorum. That download is set up to work for RTW 1.2, and there will be some changes when EB is released.
Where can this be found? Google yielded no results and this situation is making me very sad.

The Scutarii are Iberian not African, you should put all 3 versions together.

    Sheep, this thread rocks.

You could even say it "pwns."

Though I don't know if that's correct usage.

I can think of a few units that are still not in this post :
    Seleucid Thorakites Agryraspides
Seleucid Pikemen (or something like that)

I think there's also a screenshot of a (perhapsy outdated) Spartan Hoplite somewhere in the old screenshot topics.

Unfortunately the old thread with all the amazing screenshots of Prometheus' Romans and whatnot has slipped off the edge of the world, as far as I can tell. If the Spartans were in that thread, they're gone and I don't have a backup. Sarcasm? You don't happen to have a backup of them too, do ya? Heh.

All right, I added the newest pics and also another little feature: credits below the pictures. I think the artists should get credit for their amazing work and I definitely don't want anyone thinking I made them! So if you know who made a lot of the older pictures (anything that is in an official news thread you can assume I already know and just haven't got around to yet), go ahead and post them.

    Still to do:
    Add Thorakites Argyraspidai.
    Add buildings section.
    Finish credits.
    Minor touch-ups for consistency.

But for right now, it's my one full day off in the last 2 weeks, it's sunny out, and I live in friggin' San Diego. I'm going to the beach. I'll finish up later on!

You have a mistake. Well, two. The spearmen for the Goidils are Daernaght, you have the picture with Laech. Also, the Goidilic hammer warriors (Orddmohrnaght; Grand/Great Hammer Men) wear quilted armor with a bronze chest plate, or leather scale armor, and I suppose they're heavy infantry, though their actual purpose is to kill OTHER heavy infantry. They are, themselves, not heavily armored, they have no shields, etc. They're actually more like a type of medium infantry really, that's intent purpose is to kill heavy infantry with their hammers. Against lighter, swifter infantry, arrows, and javelins especially, they would be at great disadvantage. Being so specialized, they also exist in small small units, more intent for a truly strategic purpose, and not so much just hurling them at light infantry and what not.

...EB. We have units that are freakishly specialized. Suck on that vanilla. Them and their armies of chosen swordsmen, waltzing about all unopposed except by even more uber-units from other factions. No one ever using lower tier soldiers anymore. Bah, I say, fye upon it.
