I'd say mostly teen/later, it verging on kinda wargaming/history buff territory (a vast oversimplification, I know, but i'm tired and high atmospheric pressure does odd things to my brain...)

If you want better AI in vanilla RTW, definitely try DarthMod 5.0 http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=71
    Enjoy!

It's slightly better, but not perfect. On Vh the moral bonus it gets means it can rout your troops even when you're wining! Very annoying...

Well in patch 1.2 IMO on VH battles the AI and player both get EQUAL bonuses, but the AI is much smarter on VH - and very sneaky in Darth Mod 5.0: e.g. protects the rear with cavalry, after little fighting retreats when overwhelmed, aims to kill your general - now that's really sneaky, etc. I'm playing DM just a couple of days so haven't noticed all the AI new features, but it sure makes you think in battle, I even lost a couple of battles where I had 3:2 advantage, because AI ambushed me from behind and killed my general! Isn't that cool? Must be more careful next time, this is not vanilla RTW walkie talkie cakewalk!
    Cheers!

Darth Mod sounds great. I should download it then.

How does it compare with RTR and/or SPQR?

It's alot more recent, go with Darthmod

I played it and the AI seemed pretty stupid...it did manage to kill half of my 4 units of hastati with a head on charge from one general unit though.

I only noticed that the AI, though still stupid, did not attack one unit at a time. Battles are still easy, but you will no longer lose 5% and kill 90%.

The one hard thing about Darthmod is that the AI attacks you alot...so winning a battles does not mean winning the war.

I found that it gets somewhat boring after awhile...it would be nice if you fought fewer but harder battles.

The AI still stinks at proper massing upon the strategic map?
