    Default Vacation

I just have a quick question to you all, how much paid semester and time of from work do you have each year.
Im asking since I just watched the news here in Sweden and appearantly Americans have alot less vacation then Europeans. One lawyer they interviewed had 1 day of in 2005.

So, are you people trying to work yourself to death?

I think the avrage European (western probably) has 4 or 5 weeks of. Im not 100% sure of that number.

I currently have 28 vacation days per year ... a lot of companies in Germany give 30+ days per year though.

This is rather neat as you can easily make one long trip per year and still have a enough days left to take a one or more days off every now and then

    From infoplease.com
    http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0922052.html

Average paid vacation days, per year:

    Italy 42 days
    France 37 days
    Germany 35 days
    Brazil 34 days
    United Kingdom 28 days
    Canada 26 days
    Korea 25 days
    Japan 25 days
    U.S. 13 days

After 32 years with the US Fed Gov't, I get 10 paid holidays and 25 paid vacation days per year. New guys get 14 days vacation, holidays 'off', but unpaid.

    England:

If all goes well, from september I will be working for my new employer, I ll be having 21 days at entry level. Since you go up the ladder fast in my position I hope the number will increase. Its not huge but I guess its enough for me for next year since I ve been hunting flies with chopsticks for over a month now

    Greece:

Greece has just about that much but we also have like shitloads of public holidays because we are lazy. While I was working in Greece i had 20 days plus 6 more for working on a pc for more than 4 hours a day so 26. I didnt use any though, it didnt feel right.

For an American I've got it great. Every day I am thankful for the deal I get.

I earn 8 hours of vacation leave every two weeks, so that adds up to about 208 hours per year, or about 26 days, or a little more than 5 weeks.

Plus I earn 4 hours of sick leave every two weeks (I currently have over 1,600 hours accumulated) and get 11 holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, President's Day, Labor Day, MLK Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, New Year's Day, and the fourth of July.

    365 days per year
    -104 weekend days
    - 26 vacation days
    - 13 sick days
    - 11 holidays
    _____________
    211 work days per year.

LOL. But then I work about 1000 hours of overtime each year, a lot of 16 hour days each summer.

5 weeks , 2 at Christmas , 1 at Easter , 2 for the races , plus bank holidays . If a bank holiday occurs during the holidays then a day is added to the holiday .... so back to work tuesday .
Unpaid holidays , as much as I want , if they don't like it stuff 'em , I am taking a week on the 19th and 2 weeks in october to add to the 6 weeks unpaid holiday I have already had this year .
So ....work hard and you can holiday as much as you like . Unless you are stuck in a shite job where your boss can tell you what you can and cannot do

Oh dear my young Ceasar , you fail to grasp the realities of life , if you are good at your job you can write your own ticket , if the BOSS doesn't like it there are twenty or more other BOSSES in town that would start me in the morning , if I want to extend it further there are abut two dozen on three different continents that are constantly pestering me to go and work for them plus countless others that I would only have to make a phone call to.
If I could be arsed then I would set myself up as the BOSS tomorrow , but I have already been there and done that , and now I am enjoying the easy stress free life of working when I want to and partying when I want to .
The only downside is trying to take a holiday without someone turning round and asking if I could do a little job for them while I am there , I have already had 9 ask me for when I go away on the 19th of this month

He/she is not the boss, that'll be the wife, they are the employer and as long as I do what it says in my contract then they have no claims on time or life.

I've been with my company for 6 years, so I get 12 days. This is what I'll get until I've been here for 11, when it gets bumped to 15. I also get 10 paid holidays a year. I have unlimited/no sick time, depending on how you look at it. I don't have a fixed number of sick days, but 1) I can be asked to go to a doctor, even the first day of an illness and produce a note and 2) I am expected to make up the day(s) by staying late and/or coming in on weekends.

Speaking of vaction, Mrs. Corleone & I are taking what will most likely be our LAST vacation for some time (as she is 3 months pregnant) and we're meeting my parents and my sister & brother in law to do a cruise of Alaska/stay in a lodge in Denali for a week & a half. I leave the 19th. I cannot wait!!!

Flyfishing for salmon, kayaking with orcas, wrestling Kodiak bears... Okay, 2 out of 3 ain't bad...

Yes , nice job , but then again you have to put up with the annoying little *******, it takes a certain temprament to be able to do it . I find it bad enough teaching only a few at a time , with a classfull I would end up in jail . Though the pension plan and benefits are enticing , I may consider it after a few more accidents .

Us Aussies get 4 weeks standard, plus long service accrual.

I get flextime, as well, which means that anytime I work more than 7 hours in one day, that extra time gets accrued as leave too. It's pretty nice. I could work a 9 day fortnight as a standard if I wanted to (and if I wasn't so damn indispensable ).

Two weeks is typical in the U.S. Often the first year is zero or less than a week. Some jobs will work up to 4, 5, or 6 weeks if you are there long enough, others start at 2 weeks and never change. I had 4 weeks at my previous job once I hit 10+ years of service. Of course, I worked so much unpaid extra time that I often found it difficult to take my vacation--even though I only got 1 for 4 comp time at best. (Thank goodness for carryover, it was a nice cashout when I left, more than the company "pension" which had been cut by 2/3rds to milk some money out of us.)

My father-in-law has worked some in Europe. Based on his observations of work habits and hours, he says Europeans work to live, while Americans live to work. Can't say whether on not he is right, but I wouldn't doubt it.

I'm happy with the current situation here in the US. More time off would be nice, but much more vacation would disrupt the operation of the company I work for. Too much vacation, and key people go missing at the wrong time. I also know how hard it is to get back to work after a couple of weeks off, usually I'm worthless for a couple of days after a vacation anyway.

I'm not in a union, and I'm not really for unions. Unions served a purpose in a lot of industries, but eventually the corruption and greed in the union management priced the workers out of jobs (auto industry being the main example here). Unions should protect workers from exploitation, and there are jobs here that need unions, but many of the traditional unions are probably unnecessary today. The AFL-CIO (a union of unions) is breaking apart now, so we'll see how this goes. The GOP has broken the Democrats lock on union votes, so as a whole unions don't have as much power here.

Strict 35 hour week. 22 days paid holiday (+6 extra days I 'buy') 10 public holidays. There is no official limit as such on sick leave - providing you don't take the p*ss and get a doctors note for extended periods. Saying that I only tend to take about 4 or 5 days a year sick. If I am at home I end up tidying and doing chores anyhow!

Well wouldnt you allso call the Companies that (wich profit you seam to priotities) exploit the workers should have more difficulty doing so? If not by a Union then by what?

As for all, if the world is to improve, shouldnt politicians all over the world put pressure on Companies to put the workers lifes and health above profit or atleast on the same level!?

I think you misread what I said. Some jobs here need unions. These tend to be unskilled labor, sometimes with lots of immigrants, with very low wages and questionable safety precautions. Being from the state of Georgia originally, chicken processing comes to mind here. Dangerous and filthy job, minimal pay, but necessary to the food industry. OSHA (the government's safety agency) really needs to step in at some point, but the migrant workers have no say, really.

My beef is with the entrenched unions like the UAW (auto workers). These unions got powerful enough to demand wages higher than the industry could support, which eventually put their own workers on the unemployment line. The south has become a popular place with car companies these days, since most Southerners are anti-union. The last I heard, the BMW workers in Spartanburg, SC want no part of unionizing, they are doing quite well as is.
