I've never seen many disturbing movies. I ususally find horror movies funny. I would hold up any (and I mean any) video made for a song by Tool to be 10 times more disturbing than any movie.

Sin City gets in without a doubt, any movie that has three guys bits blown off in 20 minutes gets in. And the "he made me watch" part still makes me shiver.
Deer Hunter for the Roulette scenes alone
And Clockwork Orange is a messed up book, a messed up movie and a generally messed up idea.

Naked by Mike leigh is a twisted film. Also has anyone seen Clean, Shaven with the great Peter Greene? A great and twisted film.

Not that disturbing or shocking, but twisted and freaky in a good way: Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. Especially the scene where Johnny Depp wakes up in a flooded hotel room, wearing a pair of fisherman's boots and a giant lizard tail. Priceless.

I haven't had the chance to see Caligula yet, but a friend of mine said it was the most messed up thing he'd seen in a while. He had trouble watching it from the beginning to the end in one go. As for a rainy day movie I don't recommend watching Lilja 4-Ever, Monster's Ball or In The Bedroom.

I watched 'Starship Troopers II' on t.v. yesterday. It was very different from the first one. The second one was like 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Resident Evil', and 'Alien' put together.

Clockwork Orange - for the reoccuring truths in it
Das Boot - for portraying raw emotions (the translation into english sucks, see it in german)
Seven - that drug victim/torture scene was perhaps the single most frightening moment I've witnessed in a movie
Deliverance - for the mood (that movie kind of grew on me over the years)

I'll add some more when I think of them.
When I said Death before Dishonour, I meant alphabetically.

The X rated sex scenes were put into Caligula after it was finished, and they don't fit in well at all. If you are going to watch this film, I'd suggest the R rated version.

The movie Titus will burn some images into your brain you'll wish you could forget. It's an interpretation of Shakespeare's play Titus Andronicus .

I don't see Das Boot as being extremely disturbing, so much as seriously thought-provoking. I consider it one of the 10 best anti-war movies around for its wonderful portrayal of the utter futility of war at times. The final scene just blew me away. I agree that it is much better in German, with subtitles in English. And in surround sound, the digital director's cut is amazing. You loose that in the English-dubbed version.

I mentioned it above, but I think it deserves more time as one of the truly sickest movies ever - Basket Case. Look for it in your video store's horror section. It's part horror, part comedy and some parts are absolutely sick.

I've been wanting to see this movie for a while, it's supposed to be very gory, but well done (Anthony Hopkins plays the lead).

When I first saw Robocop II, I was pretty amazed at the amount of indiscriminate violence. Haven't seen it in a long time, so I can't say how it compares by today's standards. But at the time I think I called it "the violentest movie ever".

It's the combination of the visuals, the acting and the story that gives it the impact. Eventhough it's fiction, the characers really come to life, but you have to stay with it because it's a long movie that builds slowly to the climax. A lot of people won't want to sit through this movie, and I almost turned it off half way through since I was completely baffled. It's quite stylized mixing modern day and historical visuals. The director of the movie was the theatrical director of the New York stage play.

The uncut version of Robocop is pretty intense. The only way you can get it now is in the box set of all 3 movies. The comentary track which was done for the out of print Criterion Collection version is included.

    The first post said:
"This differs from just horror films. I'm talking films that are really disturbing, totally hits you in the gut and shocks you, maybe throughout or for simply having a scene which will forever stay with you."

Das Boot definately hit me in the gut and stayed with me for a long time. It is definately in my top 20 of all time.... but still... it was disturbing. It should be a school mandatory, IMO.

Once I read "Caligula" in the list, I immediately thought of Ilsa, She-Wolf of the Nazis. My friend's mother had the privilege of seeing it the night it was released, and is now one of the few, since it was taken off the market three days after it hit theatres.

While I'm on the disturbing porn mindset, I'll toss up a link to a porn spoof of H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator.

    My two most disturbing films:

Battle Royale - a brutal film with no joy at all.

Meet The Feebles - the muppets gone very very wrong.
