It seems that the british have a lot of hate , Maradona instead has lots of love. And he didn't claim that the goal was "The hand of God", it was some periodist, from here i think. Though some nutters here still call him God, i really don't care because i don't believe.

For real Pele, he was incredible.

It was right after the game he won with that goal. He had an interview on Mexican television. The interviewer was asking him-- "So, that goal you scored, that was a hand-goal, right? I mean, we all saw the replays, and you clearly punched it into the net."

Maradona said-- "No, no creo que lo meti con la mano. Pero, si fuera gol de mano, fue la mano de Dios."

Or-- "No, I don't believe I put it in with my hand. But, if it was a hand-goal, it was the hand of God."

Direct Maradona quote. So you really think this guy isn't an a-hole?

    Its Pele.

Take the two year old son test. Who would you want your two year old son to have as a footballing hero (No, not Stuart "Psycho" Pearce!). A gentleman footballer who is a fine ambassador for the game? Or a coked up little cheat who had to have his stomach stapled to keep him off the pies?

I really don't think Pele would have to apologise to Maradona even if you just looked at their footballing careers either.

Game over, and the full time score is Pele 1 Fat cheat 0

We can all agree Maradonna is a big cheating piece of whale blubber and the hand of god was wrong in most footie fans eyes (especially English ones) but his second goal for me just blew my mind and is one of finest goals ever. I still don't know why Read or butcher didn't at least cripple him with a bone cruching tackle but hey ho

It has to be Maradonna. Yes he is a fat drug abusing bastard but he was the greatest ever as well. In '86 Argentina had a very mediocre team, but they had Maradonna so they won. The Brazil national team had a great team to support Pele, Maradonna almost won the WC single handedly.

BTW, all those who voted Pele, did you ever see him play? I think most of you are going on reputation, rather than what you have seen with your own eyes.

I saw Maradonna in 86 and he was untouchable. But those 2 goals against England, the first was a handball, and the 2nd was an own-goal (watch the replays, its either Butcher or Fenwick who poke it past Shilton)

And how did Lineker manage to miss that open goal in the last minute that would've made it 2-2? To this day I'll never figure that one out

Maradona was a flame going downhill after the '86, which I did watch on the TV. Pele, also I saw on the TV and I think read bits of bio at school (at the English classes), was consistent all throughut his carreer.

Yeah Lineker should have buried it. Barnes was amazing in that game, changed the game for us.

I think to see the cheer cheek and skill of Pele see Mexico '70. The dummy he does against Uruguay i think was just jaw dropping. He also made a chip against Czechoslovakia i think which was insane as well. He did something else which was class as well but i can't think of it.

I remember watching England '66 highlights and players were just kicking the poor fella all over the job and injurying him. They couldn't deal with him , so they just near crippled him( I'm sure it was Portugal, known as the Butchers after literally kicking him off the park) I was just glad to see him return to show the world how ahead he was of everyone in Mexico four years later.

He said "I was born for soccer like Beethoven was born to perform Music" Arrogant and great. You have to respect him.

Well this is really pissing my off, you don't know him, he helped a lot of people here did everything for the team, and said that because he believe a lot in God, not because he believe that he was God, but it means that God was on Argentina's side. I've a long list of real assgholes, but it wouldn't fit here so i'll not put it. Btw i didn't remember that, my fault.

And more everybody talks about the personal business of Maradona, that's for him to see, judge him by football, please he was the best, and maybe Zidane. It doesn't surprise me that almost all the british are against him attacking his personal life because they don't have anything else to say. He didn't was a cheater (and Pele a gentlement, you've to see how he behaves around here, and talking bout personal business: it's rumored that Pele sosteined sexual relationships with a minor...) the thing is that you cannot see what he does because of magics powers . But talking about cheaters, why we don't review the World Cup of '66, the british running out of real football begun to do unethical things like expulssion of Ratín, sure many people felt humiliated when him sitted on the red carpet...

england have always been dirty when it comes to sports, just look at the 30s ashes series (yes it might be cricket but it is related), they came out and bowled nothing but bodyline bouncers, that are impossible to hit (i know coz i've played cricket with nothing but bouncers bowled) and they won coz of their dirtyness and there gonna do it again with the ashes in england this year.
    thanks,

Um, and the winning margin was...? One goal was it? Besides even if the third of the four goals was not over the line, which I don't agree, its one thing for the ref to make an honest mistake, its another to suddenly start playing basketball.

Mmm, pile it on, all these Ozzie sour grapes and excuses are just making the taste of ashes victory sweeter.

The south american and central teams are dirty as well, alot more than England ever were. Infact i don't remember many dirty English players, maybe in the seventies and early eighties. Nineties? I can't think of many, maybe david batty who was a legend in my eyes( apart from missing a vital penalty against Argentina) and that idiot vinny jones who to my knowledge never played for England.

Watch the Mexico match vs USA from 2002 Japan/Korea and see how Cobi Jones got the bag knocked out him for the majority of the match by some of the worst fouling i have ever seen or the Brazilian leonardo elbow on an american player at USA 94 which nearly takes his head off his shoulders

Franz Beckenbauer (hey, spell it right if your doing a poll) or Pele.
I haven't seen so much footage of Pele playing... but everybody keeps insisting he is the best, so there has to be some merrit to it.
Beckenbauer for his"lifetime achievement" for becoming a world champion as a player (74) and as a trainer (90).
Hugo Sanchez and Juergen Kliensmann get honorary votes from me.

Sorry man . Can i change the spelling on the poll?
If you see Pele playing and put it before Maradona he can have the numbers but Maradona has the magic. Though i'll agree with you in that Beckenabuer was the best defender of all time. It seems that everybody is taking it from the side of numbers, i really don't need that opinion because it's wrote on books, what i need is the best individual player, for technique and skill in his possition, let's also remember that those numbers are achieved with a team, so they don't say so much of the player, further more, the 3 World Cups that Pele won, wasn't his making, the teams of Brazil were really amazing, many players of those teams deserved to be on this list, but the options only go to 30.

Are you serious ? If the ref had not call it , do you sure that England could scored the 4th , how can you know that ? it was 2:2 at the time and even if England scored 18 goals after the mistake , it was still 2:2 and an open match .
Again , England took the 1966 by a ref mistake and lost it in 1986 by another ref mistake - that is football ! Now maradona ? He and all the Argentinians are sleeping very good since than , ask them

I'm not saying England are angels when it comes to the beautiful game but there are far worse teams for fouling , cheating and other unsporting behaviour

This looks like the appropriate time to insert this picture in this thread:

Edit->For my fellow Americans, and others too young to remember, this famous pic shows renowned hardman (and now actor) Vinnie Jones "marking" Paul Gascoigne (at the time, of Wimbledon and Newcastle United respectively, IIRC). If Gascoigne hadn't wasted his talent on beer and kebabs, he may have made the poll's list...

Edit #2 -> tried to import this pic from here first, it's a larger one but no indirects allowed.

    Absolutely Maradona..

Pele was a "home" player. Show me what he could do when he was out of Brazil or without his Brazilian teammates..

Maradona is a player that could prove that it was the hand of the God but he already had the foot. Let me remind you of his goal dribbling past the British players all along half the pitch.

Once, when he was out of Argentina, when he was a Napoli commander, I saw him standing next to the corner flag, closed on by a player, trapped at the point. He suddenly lifted the ball with some trick and lobbed the towards the goal with the outside of his right foot. And guess what ? It was in..

Pele may be an excellent scorer but Maradona was a total attacker.

After reading some recent posts, I understand why USA is weak at soccer. :) Out of interest :)
