It was not theirs to reason why,
It was not theirs to make reply,
It was theirs but to do or die.

And I think medieval taxes on peasants were pretty low, relative even to the USA today, coming in at about 25%.

Ja Mata, Tosa.
The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England cannot enter – all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement! - William Pitt the Elder

As a fellow VA resident I must say this race is a bit ridiculous. It's been a hate-fest from day one. The race for attorney general has been rather delightfully civil though.
I am also being bombarded with the campaign ads for this race. They are really throwing a lot into this campaign, I have gotten lots of calls from the Virginia GOP, and over the weekend they were canvasing the neighborhood. Northern VA (basically DC suburbs) tends to vote Democratic, while the rest of the state usually votes Republican, so unfortunately I am in a contested area. The litter of campaign signs up and down roads is bad enough.
I think the best attack was the gas-tax crack that Kilgore's campaign blew out of proportion. TinCow is right, the mudslinging started real early in this one.
The best part is that we get this every four years, because Virginia law doesn't allow back-to-back terms by a governor.
